Senior L&D. Bridgefield A 19 - 11 Warrington

Warrington travelled to unbeaten Bridgefield A on Thursday in the hope to reverse the result of the narrow defeat earlier in the year.

The first quater started slowly with lots of chances missed from both sides but Bridgefield broke the deadlock after about 3 minutes. Warrington pulled one back 2 minutes later through Tom Hadley. David Price was then excluded for a defensive foul in the pit, but Warrington managed to defend the man down situation. Bridgefield then pulled 4-1 ahead until Addison Brown clawed one back at the end of the quarter. It finished 4 - 2 to Bridgefield.

The second quarter was to see the introduction of the in form player on the night. James Barker buried two excellently taken goals. But Bridgefield were to win this quarter 8-2 and it was here the game was won. At the end of the 2nd quarter the score stood at 12 - 4.

The third quarter saw a resurgent Warrington play much better polo and take the time to set up the arc and play percentage polo. Two more excellent goals from James Barker and a goal each from Tom Hadley and Addison Brown saw Warrington win this quarter 3 - 4 but the score was still against Warrington at 15 - 8.

The last quarter was again close and two more goals from Addison and a rare goal from Peter Burke when he came out of goals meant Warrington lost the quarter 4 - 3. Final score 19 - 11 to Bridgefield.

Warrington were beaten in this game by the fast break and giving the ball away quickly on our attacks played into the hands of the faster and fitter Bridgefield team. Stand out performances however were from four goal James Barker and Paul Daintith had a one of his best games to date. The young players coped well against the stronger opponents especially Tom Costello who had one of his best games also. Neil Musgrove was solid in goals and made some excellent saves especially in the shallow end. Andy Burke and David Price are forming an Tony Adams and Martin Keown type partnership in defence. Lets hope they can take the positives from this game into next weeks game at home against Liverpool.

Team: P Burke (1), A Brown (4), T Mainwaring, A Burke, T Hadley (2), J Barker (4), T Costello, D Price, S Cooper, P Daintith, N Musgrove.

As a club we are looking to improve the pool for water polo and all competitive aquatic sport and are looking to confirm the following improvements. Increased pool depth, and improved spectator facilities that are within the swimming pool itself e.g. an open balcony that can view the main and teaching pools are a priority, alongside minimising the length of any closure by careful phasing of the works.

    16&U Friendly. Southport 1 - 22 Warrington

Warrington V Southport away match at the Dunes in Southport

On Monday 30th March Warrington Team Parents battled fierce weather in a one hour journey to get the 16&U team to the Dunes Watersplash in Southport in time to play a friendly match. We had a team of nine players of varying age’s,  2 * 99’s, 1 * 2000, 5 * 2001’s and a 2002. So most players were from the 14&U team. Southport turned up with a team of 11 players also of varying ages.

After a small warm-up the game got under way, the team showed quick thinking and great passing to get the ball to the pit within 25 seconds where Molly Boniface-Ashton popped in her first goal, followed shortly by 3 goals from Ben Dailey, 1 from Emily Bowater and 1 from Adam Farini and another from Molly. The first quarter was a delight to watch with some excellent team play, forming the arc and doing all the right things. The first quarter ended Warrington 8 – Southport 0.

The second quarter continued with great team work and Dom Richard started by putting one in the back of the net, Ben followed with another and Molly scored 2 goals in the second quarter and the score at the end of the second quarter was Warrington 12 – Southport 0.

Third quarter became a bit heated, there was a lot of close marking and a bit of shoving between Stanley Mainwaring and Orange hat 5, which was one of the upper 16’s on the Southport team. Molly Boniface-Ashton scored 2, Katie Bowater scored 1. The friction between Stanley and the Orange Hat 5 came to head in the shallow end where nothing could be hidden by the glare of the water which led to both lads being “wrapped up” for the match. Southport Orange hat 2 scored the first and only goal for Southport and the third quarter ended Warrington 15 – Southport 1.

In the last quarter Emily Bowater scored 2, Dom Richard scored 1, Dan Farini scored 1 and Molly Boniface-Ashton scored 2 more bringing her total to 7 goals, Ben Dailey and Dom Richard both with 4 goals each in total, Emily Bowater with 3 goals and Dan Farini with 2 goals and Katie Bowater scoring total of 1 and Adam Farini with one goal . The end result was a great match with the team playing well together.  The final score  Warrington 22 – Southport 1. The team played technically and took advantage of Southports weakness’s. Luke Atkinson made some brilliant saves including blocking power shots from the big guy (Orange hat 5). Teams shook hands and all was forgiven, until next time…

Well Done 16&U’s on your second friendly of the season.

    Team: L Atkinson, D Richard (4), K Bowater (1), M Bonifsce-Ashton (7), S Mainwaring, A Farini (1), D Farini (2), E Bowater (3), B Dailey (4)

    Senior L&D. Birkenhead 9 - 10 Warrington

Warrington looked to continue their winning streak as they headed over to Europa Pools to face off against Birkenhead. Before the game Addison was desperate to speak to the match report writer about comments last week and desperately tried to clarify that he is not desperate. Warrington were fired up as they knew the squad assembled stood a good chance of beating Birkenhead. Tom Costello was again captain and he was to continue his 100% win record. The whole game was nip and tuck with both teams exchanging blows and rarely more than one goal separated the sides. Two goals from Addison and one from Tom Hadley put Warrington 2 - 3 ahead after the first quarter.
The second quarter was not so good and was typified by a frankly shambolic man up opportunity. Warrington took too long to get into position and the chance came to nothing. There was some good play though, Tim Mainwaring making an excellent steal with the help of Tom Costello. The visitors lost the second quarter despite another goal from Addison and at half time were 4 - 3 behind. One constant theme in this match was Warrington’s impressive defensive display, nullifying Birkenhead’s main threats and saving two man down situations. Birkenhead often resorted to long range efforts and these were easily dealt with by Peter Burke in goals who was in fine form and clearly fired up for the game. The return of David Price and his high pitch whooping added extra strength and aggression alongside Andy Burke, which formed the platform for Warrington to work their attacks. Before the match Andy Burke was quoted as saying “I’ve hurt my shoulder but it’s ok it’s not like I’ll be doing much swimming” never a truer word been said there Andy. Warrington gave a few people a go at the swim off and not even the young spritely swimmers such as Sam Cooper or Tim Mainwaring could win the ball from the restart, Warrington lost every one.
The third quarter saw a change of ends and two new hats due to damage and loss which gave the crowd an idea of the physical nature of this game. However the visitors new it was all to play for with only one goal in it. A good piece of play from Tom Hadley and an eventual pass after some delay set up Conor Dean for a well taken goal. Addison also scored two more goals, although one could argue the goal Tom Hadley scored which bounced from inside the goal to Addison to put in the empty net was not correctly noted on the team sheet. Tom will have to speak to the dubious goals panel on that one.
This set the game up for a tense final quarter as the score was now 7 - 7. Warrington took the lead in the first minute and then successfully defended a man down situation. Then after a foul on five metres Tom Hadley fired an audacious back hand shot which deflected of the head of Sam Cooper into the goal. Sam claimed to have skilfully guided the ball past the goalie, others would say it smashed him on the side of the head before he knew anything about it. The dubious goals panel this time ruled in favour of Tom. 7 - 9 with 5 minutes to play. Birkenhead then scored two goals sandwiched either side of Addison’s 7th on the night. Ian ‘gerrard’ Musgrove then took to the water and was sent out for a pit defence foul within seconds of getting in. Not fit equals major fouls it would appear. At 9 - 10 this could of cost Warrington the win but thankfully the team defended it well and held out the last few seconds of the match to record a great victory. Noted performances on the night were James Barker and Sam Cooper who both put in a real shift on the either wing and played some excellent polo. Although neither scored it could be argued as their best game yet. Although it was clear from James’ breathing rate after, it was more swimming than he was used to in goals. Another great team performance and a well earned few weeks rest before Bridgefield A and Liverpool at the end of April.
    Team: P Burke, T Mainwaring, A Burke, T Costello, D Price, J Barker, S Cooper, I Musgrove, C Dean (1), T Hadley (2), A Brown (7).

    Senior L&D. Warrington 21 - 7 Bridgefield B

Warrington entertained Bridgefield B on Wednesday night on the back of 3 straight wins. With a very strong squad assembled it was looking good for Warrington as Bridgefield appeared to have quite a young team and only one sub. Tom Costello was captain for the night and I don’t know if he won or lost the coin toss but the teams had to switch and Warrington attacked the deep end 1st. It proved to be a shrewd move by Tom as Warrington came out 8-0 winners in the first quarter. Four goals from Tom Hadley, two from Addison and two from Samir.
The second quarter was not good from Warrington and attacking the deep end Bridgefield came out 1-3 winners to take the score to 9-3 to Warrington. This was despite the experienced Neil Musgrove showing the young lads how to defend with an excellent steal in the deep end showing he can still mix it with the best of them. Some harsh words from caretaker manager Ian Musgrove at half time saw the team come out firing again for the third. Warrington won this quarter 7-1 including a hatrick from Rafik and an especially pleasing well worked man up goal. Conor Dean got on the score sheet and Addison and Tom Hadley also added to their tallies.
The third quarter also saw Peter Burke come out of goals and after creating some space in the deep end he clearly had a rush of blood to the head being so far from the safety of his goal posts and fluffed his best chance of scoring so far this year. Peter was indeed excellent in goals, as always, pulling off some fine saves and distributing really well to start the Warrington attacks.
The last quarter was not to be a repeat of the second and Warrington defended much better and worked some good opportunities in attack. Sam Cooper stepped up with 2 goals, including a shallow end lob. Then with seconds on the clock Addison fired an outrageous long range effort into the shallow end goal. He is clearly desperate to keep pace with Tom Hadley in the top scorer chart, having missed a game last week. Contender for goal of the season it may be but still only worth one in the top scorer chart. Tim Mainwaring is improving with each game and had a good game. Similarly Tom Costello equited himself well and played some good polo. James Barker fresh from GB duty in Malta had a solid game but unfortunately did not add to his goal tally. Andy Burke was again the linchpin of the Warrington defence, likened (by himself mostly) to an in form Vincent Kompany. This was another excellent team performance from one of the best Warrington sides assembled in recent years. Let’s hope we can get a similar team out to face Birkenhead on Monday as they will be close rivals come the end of the season. Credit must also go to Bridgefield whose young players worked and scored some excellent goals and showed real promise for the future. I imagine the reverse fixture will see the return of some of their more senior players and an even sterner test for Warrington.
    Team: P Burke, T Hadley (7), J Barker, T Costello, R Tahraoui (3), C Dean (1), A Burke, S Tahraoui (2), T Mainwaring, S Cooper (2), N Musgrove, A Brown (6).

    Senior L&D. Port Sunlight 6 - 9 Warrington

Wednesday night saw the Warrington seniors check their pockets for £1.70 (it seems to go up 50p every time we use it?) in change for the toll and head through the tunnel to the Wirral to play Port Sunlight. With a seriously depleted squad of only 9 players Warrington were still confident they had what it takes to get the win at The Oval leisure centre. With Tom Costello filming the match for his A-level coursework the pressure was on to put on a good show. The first quater saw goals from Tom Hadley and Paul Daintith as Warrington made a slow but measured start. The lack of experience in the squad really showed on the man up situations as the team were slow to set up and conversion rate was poor. 3 goals in each of the 2nd and 3rd quarters put Warrington 4-9 ahead going into the last quarter. Defending the deep end Warrington invited pressure on and although the defense was strong it was a tense last quarter which Warrington lost 2-0. Thankfully the lead was good enough to see out the win. The young players in the squad, Sam Cooper, Tom Costello and Tom Pye equitied themselves well and with more match practice the decision making and composure will continue to improve. Highlights of the game were Tom Hadley’s dominance in the pit and David Price’s steal and break away goal from half way. Onlookers were surprised he could swim that far and fast but the talismanic defender took it well. Andy Burke was again excellent in defense and Neil Musgrove and Peter Burke shared the goal keeping and defensive duties well. Ian Musgrove also put his trunks on but clearly more for show as he is not ready for his full comeback just yet. All in all a good win made harder than it needed to be but its the result that counts. Next week Bridgefield B at fortress Great Sankey.

    Team: N Musgrove, T Hadley (4), D Price (2), A Burke, P Burke, T Costello (1), S Cooper, T Pye (1), P Daintith (1), I Musgrove

If your child is available for the tournament this Saturday then please let me know.

    Regards,

    Mark Bowater

    Senior L&D. Warrington 13 - 7 Chester

Warrington senior team continued their season with another impressive win. This was a close match last year and Warrington expected a tough, physical game. The team were fired up for the first quater attacking the deep end, as they did not want a slow start like the Southport game. It was this strong first quarter that set Warrington up for the win. Some impressive pit attacking from Tom Hadley and Addison Brown saw them score 3 and 2 goals each respectively. The returning Samir Tahraoui also chipped in with two goals from outside 5 metres. Also impressive was Warrington converting 2 out of 2 ‘man up’ situations. First quarter 7 - 2 to Warrington. The second quarter was a much closer affair as Warrington concentrated on tightening up the defense in the deep end with some excellent team defense and especially from Andy Burke and David Price. End of the 2nd quarter it was 10 - 4 to Warrington. With the game fairly safe Warrington swapped goalie with Peter Burke coming out of goals for Neil Musgrove. The younger players in the squad showed growing confidence in the water and on the ball. Both Tom Costello and Tim Mainwaring are improving with every game. The third quarter saw a stop in play after an accidental kick to the head from Paul Daintith left a Chester player a little dazed. Paul and the team hope he is ok. The middle of the third also saw James Barker break free down the left and one on one with the keeper about 2 metres out James dummied the shot about 15 times before slamming the ball so far wide I believe it went off the side of the pool not even the end? Miss of the century? A shout of “stick to goalie” was aimed at the GB junior keeper from the crowd. Thankfully James attoned for this error with an excellent goal in the top corner later in the quarter. Much more like it. The third quarter finished 13 - 5 to Warrington. The last quarter saw 3 exclusions for Warrington plus a wrapping up for Tom Costello as he lashed out in disgust at a referee decision and accidentally slapped another player in the face. Obviously not intentional but you have got to keep your cool in this game, a lesson for the young man there. Warrington lost the last quarter 0 - 2 but by then the game was already won. A great game again and impressive win. Great to see Rafik Tahraoui back in the water too. Next up Port Sunlight in two weeks.

    Team: P. Burke, T. Hadley (6), S. Tahraoui (2), T. Mainwaring, D. Price, J. Barker, A. Brown (4), T. Costello, A. Burke, P. Daintith, R. Tahraoui, N. Musgrove

    U12 Friendly vs Bridgefield

The U12 team were keen to get some match practice before the season starts and to keep their eye in whilst we wait for resolution on junior water polo in Warrington. With this in mind they travelled to Bridgefield on Thursday night.

    Report by D. Williams

The friendly went really well. Bridgefield were well organised and drilled, while our emerging side showed good promise for the future.
We played some single period matches so scores did not deplete confidences. The first finishing 7-1, the next 5-0 then we held a 1-2 win due to some of our our old squad pulling together.
Some players who showed quality, Eleanor Brear for some excellent goal keeping, Louis Stowels for shear heart for taking on more physically superior players. Everyone played fantastically, never being deflated by scorelines, just enjoying the experience, Bullying the coach to get back in the water.
    Well done U12’s

    Senior L&D. Warrington 29 - 9 Southport

A much smaller and younger squad than last week saw Warrington get their first points on the board after the win against Southport. After celebrations for Alan Boyle’s MBE at the weekend non other than Samir Tahraoui was tempted into a return to action. He was big when he was a junior, now he is massive! There were also senior team debut’s for Adam Farini and Tom Pye, who both equited themself extremely well and managed to get on the score sheet. Well done lads.

After the first quater the score was 0-0 and Warrington had missed three ‘man up’ opportunities and numeorus good chances. It was looking like it could be one of those nights. At the start of the second Warrington went 0-1 down. Thankfully it just took the team a short while to gel and Tom Hadley settled the team with 3 goals in a minute. More goals from Addison, Samir and James Barker saw the second quater end 10-3 to Warrington. The third quater saw the goals more evenly spread amongst the team with Tom Costello showing Tom Hadley how to score a penalty. Sam Cooper, Adam Farini and David Price also opened their account for the evening. End of the third 19-4 to Warrington. Hatricks in the final quater for David Price and James Barker and goals for Sam Cooper (another lob), Tom Costello, Tim Mainwaring and a goal in the last 5 seconds for Tom Pye rounded off a good night in the end for Warrington.

Next game Chester at home on 25th Feb with Warrington edging it by one goal last year it will be a good test for the team.

    Team: N Musgrove (Goalie), A Brown (4), S Cooper (2), T Costello (2), T Hadley (6), J Barker (4), A Farini (1), T Mainwaring (1), D Price (4), S Tahraoui (4), T Pye (1).

    Senior L&D. Warrington 13 - 15 Bridgefield A

The mens team ran last years L&D winners close in a hard fought 1st game of the season. Excellent play from a strong 12 man squad showed great promise for the year ahead. Highlights included Sam Cooper’s lob goal on the last second of the 30 second shot clock in the shallow end and Addison Brown’s flick goal from a superb pass over the pit defence.

    Team: P Burke (Goalie), T Hadley (1), A Brown (5), T Costello, C Dean (3), P Daintith, T Mainwaring (1), J Barker (2), S Cooper (1), A Burke, D Price, N Musgrove

    England Talent

Warrington Water Polo – England Talent

Warrington Water Polo hit a new time record with 8 players that have been invited to trial for “England Talent” at Cardiff this year, if successful they will become part of a 3 year programme with a view to represent GB at the European Championships in 2017/18. All players selected to trial have represented Water Polo at Regional level. Players trialling for their first year are Emma Horne, Katie Bowater, Connor Lynch, Dom Richard, and Luke Atkinson. Players invited for year 2 training are Ben Dailey, Emily Bowater and Molly Boniface-Ashton.

Well done to those players and keep it up.
