Alan Boyle Receives MBE for Services to Swimming and Water Polo

Dr Alan Boyle has been recognised with the award of an MBE in the New Years Honours list for his exceptional contribution to swimming and water polo over the last sixty years.

He receives an MBE in recognition of his services to swimming and water polo which have included being a player, coach, tutor and referee, and helped to administer the sport from grassroots to the highest level within the regional and national governing bodies

Alan has always contributed to the encouragement and coaching of water polo players at club and regional level, from the youngest players to senior representative sides for the club, District and Northern Counties for over three decades. He has been the water polo coach at the Warrington club for thirty years, Water Polo Secretary for twenty seven years as well as swimming coach for five years. He regularly attends training session three to four times a week and only misses these due the other commitments to do with water polo. At one point he was responsible for coaching three club teams, one county team, two district teams, and two regional teams. Warrington Swimming and Water Polo club has won over sixty championships, tournaments and leagues whilst he has been the coach, not counting the inter district and regional team efforts and wins over this period. In recent years there have been a number of players who have gone on to represent GB at water polo which includes Hazel Musgrove who competed in London 2012, Courtney Dean and Tom Hadley.

He is well recognised throughout the water polo world not only as a coach, but also as a referee for local leagues and until recently up to National league and ASA level. He must have refereed over 1,000 games in his career- an essential activity as without people like Alan the game does not exist.

Other tasks undertaken includes coordinating refereeing appointments in the North West for all the games he was not refereeing himself (up to four games or more on some evenings). He has also organised and ran many courses to increase participation in the sport (mini polo for youngsters, open days at local pools, mini competitions in the region to name but a few), but also to train and mentor new coaches, referees, and the officials necessary to allow competitions and matches to take place.

Alan has also taken on significant roles in the Region and National Governing body (Amateur Swimming Association -ASA for short) in relation to constitutional matters, rules and regulations. He has helped many local clubs and various Associations to amend rules or constitutions that were very outdated, or without adequate written documentation that aligned with the governing body, and in many cases conflicting or silent on important issues such as child welfare and safety, and the protection of volunteers who were running and managing clubs.

“Alan deserves the recognition for his endeavours, and hopefully encourages many other volunteers to follow in his footsteps and keep water polo as an active and thriving sport for many generations to come.”

Other details

Alan was born on 22nd January 1938, and will be 77 years old in three weeks time

Alan has been a member of Warrington Swimming and Water Polo Club for over sixty years.

Not only was he a keen swimmer winning ten club championships, he also played in the water polo team for twenty one years.

Since then he has put a tremendous amount of energy back into the sport, with many management and secretarial roles at club, regional and national levels on swimming and water polo executive committees. This has included being President of the Northern Counties Swimming Association, the Northern Water Polo league and Cheshire County.

This commitment was recognised by the club when he was made a life member of the club in 1982 and by the Northern Counties with an award for his services to Water Polo in 2001. Since then he has also been granted life member status in all the County, District and Regional bodies covering the sport, and been recognised by further awards for his amazing and sustained contributions- all voluntary.

Warrington v Liverpool (Snr)

Warrington’s turned out ten players to play their penultimate game of the season in the Liverpool & District League. It was the first senior match where we used our new shot clocks.

Warrington started well with veteran Andy Burke being first to score. Tom Hadley was soon to make it 2-0 as Warrington attacked the deep end. Liverpool came back into the game with two goals but Ian Musgrove ended the quarter with a goal and Warrington had played some good water polo and kept Liverpool to two goals with some good defending.

The second quarter was tight as Warrington attacked the shallow end we might have expected more goals but Liverpool had a strong experienced team. It didn’t keep Addison Brown out who scored within two minutes to bring the score to 4-2 and that’s how the quarter ended.

In the third quarter it was Warrington’s turn to attack the deep end we needed to add to our lead as Liverpool would be strong in the final quarter. It was a great start as Addison Brown made it 5-2 but Liverpool soon pulled one back. With 3 minutes gone Liverpool had a player excluded and but Warrington missed the chance to move further ahead. Liverpool continued to fight back with another goal to make it 5-4. With less than two minutes left of the quarter Addison Brown scored his third goal and Warrington ended the quarter 6-4 up.

Warrington needed to defend the deep in the final quarter with only a two goal cushion the game was far from over. The final quarter started with a Liverpool exclusion but Warrington could not convert the man up in the shallow end. Then Liverpool scored two goals to bring the score to 6-6 Warrington needed to hang on to get something out of this game. With two minutes to go Connor Dean who showed great form on the night scored to make it 7-6. Twenty seconds later Liverpool had another player excluded but Warrington missed the chance to increase the lead. The game ended 7-6 to Warrington and an historic win for Warrington over a team likely to finish 2nd in the league.

The Warrington team played really well and younger players Tim Mainwaring and Tom Costello played a vital role in holding their own against some rather large players whilst some of the Warrington old guard had a blow! The shot clocks played a significant part as it gave our players time to cover breaks when they realised the opposition were about to gain possession and it helped on the attack when we started our counter attack a few seconds earlier. My thanks to table officials Fiona Dean and Dr Alan Boyle for working out very quickly how to work the shot clocks and score boards.

Warrington’s Team included:- Perter Burke GK, Ian Musgrove (1), Addison Brown (3), Tom Hadley (1), Andrew Burke (1), Connor Dean (1), Tom Costello, Tim Mainwaring, Dave Price and Neil Musgrove GK.

Warrington v Stretford 14 & under

27th September

Warrington took on Stretford who are one of the strongest teams in the Manchester & District League at Great Sankey. Warrington were without Molly Boniface Ashton who is injured.

Warrington started well with a goal from Connor Lynch who is playing well as his fitness improves. The quarter was without incident until with just over a minute left Luke Boardman was excluded and Stretford scored an equaliser.

With 11 seconds to go Ben Dailey put Warrington in front with an important goal. In the second quarter Dom Richards was excluded and within seconds Stretford equalised. Then two Stretford players were excluded but Warrington could not take advantage which was costly as Stretford hit back with a goal and took the lead. Stretford then had two more players excluded and again Warrington did not convert the man ups. Stretford were then awarded a penalty but the inform Luke Atkinson ensured the scorer was not troubled. The quarter ended 2-3 to Stretford.

In the third quarter Stretford had another player excluded again Warrington didn’t convert the power play and again Stretford scored to make it 2-4. Warrington fought back with a goal from Dom Richards and then by Ben Dailey to bring the score to 4-5.

In the final quarter the first goal would be important and it was Stretford who scored first to go 4-6 in the lead. The players had a taste of strict refereeing and in a two minute period Stretford had four players excluded and Warrington’s Emily Bowater was excluded twice. Neither team scored from a man up. Eventually Stretford scored but again gave away two further man ups Warrington again failed to convert the advantage into a goal. Connor Lynch then scored with 19 seconds to go but it was too late for Warrington and the game ended Warrington 5 Stretford 7. Stretford had 14 exclusions to Warrington’s 4 and Warrington did not convert a single man up which clearly cost us the game.

My thanks to Tom Costello for coaching the team in my absence.

Warrington 9 Chester 8 (Snr)

Warrington v Chester - 24th September L&D League

Warrington took on Chester for the second time this season after a narrow victory over them on the last meeting it looked likely it would be another close encounter. Chester’s pool has been shut down for some time which meant the game was technically their home match but their pool closure meant the fixture needed to be played at Great Sankey.

Warrington started well with a goal from Tom Hadley although Chester quickly scored an equaliser. Andy Mason put Warrington ahead but again Chester pulled one back. Andy Burke was then excluded and Chester converted the man up to go 2-3 into the lead. Then Chester scored again as their No3 P. Williams scored his second goal and Chester led 2-4. With 7 seconds of the quarter left Warrington were awarded a penalty and Ian Musgrove calmly scored from 5m’s. The quarter ended 3-4 to Chester.

In the second quarter Tim Mainwaring was excluded after 16 seconds Warrington defended the man down and after two minutes of the quarter Addison Brown brought the scores to 4-4. Within 15 seconds Chester went ahead with another goal from P. Williams but then went on to have two players excluded. Warrington pulled one back with a goal from Ian Musgrove. Warrington were then awarded a penalty but the chance to go ahead was missed which was to prove costly as Chester scored twice in two minutes to finish the quarter 5-7 ahead.

The third quarter saw Andy Mason excluded but Warrington defended the man down. Chester then had a player excluded and Addison Brown scored his third goal of the game to bring the score to 6-7. Then an important breakthrough as Ian Musgrove scored his third goal to make it 7-7. Tim Mainwaring then received his second exclusion and Chester scored and finished the quarter 7-8 ahead.

The final quarter was clearly going to be tight and the first goal could be crucial. After over two minutes of stalemate Tom Hadley scored his second goal of the game to make it 8-8, but then Tim Mainwaring picked up his third exclusion and an early shower but Warrington defended the man down. Then Tom Hadley scored his third goal of the game to push Warrington into a one goal lead. Andy Mason was then excluded together with a Chester player. Warrington managed to hold their nerve and saw the game out to win the game 9-8. A good win against a solid Chester team.

Warrington’s team included: - Peter Burke, Tom Costello, Andy Mason, Addison Brown (3), Tom Hadley (3), Andrew Burke, Ian Musgrove (3), Neil Musgrove and Tim Mainwaring.

Tyldesley v Warrington 14 & under M&D League

 21st September

Warrington visited Tyldesley in the Manchester & District League and Warrington started well as the home team had a player excluded and Dan Farini scored. Warrington moved into overdrive as Ben Dailey scored 30 seconds later and then Dan Farini scored his second and Warrington’s third goal. Ben Dailey then made it 0-4 to Warrington in a great start. Dan Farini then picked up an exclusion but no harm done as Tyldesley did not convert the man up and Warrington counter attacked with a third goal from Ben Dailey. Warrington and Tyldesley then both had players excluded but it was Warrington who scored with only 25 seconds of the quarter left. The quarter finished 0-6 to Warrington.

In the second quarter Warrington started as they started the first quarter with a goal from Dan Farini, Tyldesley pulled one back but Warrington continued to score a succession of goals with Dom Richards, Ben Dailey (4th goal), Dan Farini (4th goal) and Matt Williams to take the score to 1-11. Tyldesley pulled one back before Ben Dailey scored his fifth goal. Two more exclusions one from either side did not affect the score and the half time score read 2-12.

In the third quarter there were more goals as Tyldesley had a player excluded and Dom Richards helped himself to two goals Tyldesley kept fighting back and scored their third goal. Two exclusion’s followed; one from either side but it was Warrington that converted than man up to make the score 3-15.

In the final quarter Ben Dailey was excluded after 45 seconds Tyldesley didn’t score but Dom Richards scored his fifth goal. Connor Lynch was then excluded and Tyldesley pulled one back to 4-16. Emma Horne then scored but then Tyldesley showed great resilience and scored twice before Warrington finished the game off with goals from Ben Dailey and Dom Richards. The final score was 6-19 to Warrington.

I was not present at the match and my sincere thanks to James Williams who stood in as coach. I understand from spectators present that Luke Atkinson was out standing in goal which kept Tyldesley score to a modest six goals.

The referee later commented that Warrington had played some of the best water polo he had ever seen at the age. A great team performance.

Warrington’s team included: - Luke Atkinson (GK), Ben Dailey (6), Connor Lynch (1), Matt Williams (1), Dan Farini (4), Emily Bowater, Emma Horne (1), Katie Bowater, Dominic Richards (6).

Warrington v Bridgefield Blues (Snr) L&D League

 10th September

Warrington played host to the probable L&D league winners for 2014, Bridgefield Blues which included senior international Tom Curwen. Warrington had a mixture of players lined up from some in the autumn of their careers and some strong younger players. The team started the first quarter without a team talk as coach was busy setting the pitch up. Bridgefield attacked the deep and scored two quick goals. Andy Mason was then excluded after holding a Bridgefield player. Bridgefield converted the man up to go 0-3 in to the lead. Andy Mason was excluded again and four seconds later Bridgefield were 0-4 ahead.

A two minute team talk and attacking the deep would perhaps help Warrington back into the match. Bridgefield had not read the script and scored a 5th goal. Ian Musgrove pulled one back for Warrington but Bridgefield scored again to make it 1-6. Ian Musgrove then scored with 36 seconds left but had time to score another with 1 second left on the clock. Warrington winning the quarter 3-2 and the half time score was 3-6.

In the third quarter Warrington defended the deep and Bridgefield were difficult to contain with fast cross breaks and quick passing they scored just after a minute. Warrington pulled one back as Addison Brown scored his first goal. Bridgefield then scored three further goals and the quarter finished 4-10 to Bridgefield.

In the final quarter Warrington were looking for a better quarter but Bridgefield scored first. Warrington continued to attack as Addison Brown scored then Ian Musgrove scored a great goal with a quick pass from our 2m to the oppositions 2m Ian caught the ball turned and shot into the top corner giving the Bridgefield goalkeeper no chance, sometimes water polo can be so simple. The score board showed 6-11 and there was a glimmer of a Warrington come back. The comeback continued as Tom Hadley scored and then 40 seconds later Addison Brown scored his third goal to make it 8-11. Tom Hadley scored again to bring Warrington within two goals but with 55 seconds left Bridgefield scored and then with 12 seconds left scored again to bring the final score to 9-13.

A really good fight back from Warrington against an excellent Bridgefield side.

Warrington’s Team included Peter Burke (GK), Addison Brown (3), Tom Hadley (2), Ian Musgrove (4), Andy Burke, Tom Costello, Paul Dainteith, Andy Mason, and Tim Mainwaring. adHadley

Warrington 11 Bridgefield 4 (14&u M&D)

It was with some trepidation that Warrington took on Bridgefield in the Manchester & District League at Great Sankey. With goal keeper Luke Atkinson and standby goal keeper Luke Boardman both unavailable Warrington looked to face a tough test against old rivals Bridgefield. However Bridgefield had some players missing as well bringing 9 players. Warrington started well with a goal from Molly Boniface-Ashton. Bridgefield had a player excluded and Molly Boniface-Ashton scored from the man up. The quarter ended 3-0 with Molly Boniface Ashton already with a hat trick.

In the second quarter the fast improving Connor Lynch scored. In a scrappy quarter there were few goals until the last minute when Molly Boniface-Ashton scored to make it 5-0 before Bridgefield pulled one back.

In the third quarter it was again a quite quarter with only two goals. The first came from Connor Lynch and with two minutes to go Bridgefield pulled one back.  The quarter ended 6-2.

In the final quarter there were plenty of goals with Bridgefield being the first to score, before Warrington pulled one back through you guessed it Molly Boniface Ashton. Twelve year old Katie Bowater then scored an excellent goal from the left wing to make it 8-3. Bridgefield continued to battle with a goal before Molly Boniface Ashton scored her 6th goal. Matt Williams was then excluded but Warrington defended well and Bridgefield didn’t score. Warrington scored two more goals through Matt Williams and Emily Bowater the final score 11-4 to Warrington.

An excellent team performance by all eight Warrington players. My thanks to Dom Richards, Conor Lynch and Matt Williams for taking turns to play in goal. Warrington’s best player was Molly Boniface Ashton with six goals.

Warrington’s Team included Conor Lynch (2), Ben Dailey, Matt Williams (1), Molly Boniface Ashton (6), Emily Bowater (1), Dom Richards, Katie Bowater(1).
