Royton 13 Warrington 8 U12s B&D KO

Warrington Whirlwinds continued their development as they visited Royton to play two matches. The first game was declared as a Bolton and District knockout match. Warrington despite missing their goal keeper held Royton close in the first half with two goals from the ever improving Bret Takemoto, Marcus Woods and one goal from team captain Katie Bowater. However Royton managed four goals compared to Royton’s eight. The second half was a closer affair again Bret Takemoto was on target with two goals and Katie Bowater one. Royton managed only five goals in this half but were worthy winners. The whole team played well and my thanks to Zack Williams who covered in goal when I’m sure he was desperate to play his normal role.

The next game is described in the report for the M&D League Match.

Royton 7 Warrington 9 (12&u M&D League)

Following the earlier knockout match the teams took a fifteen minute rest before commencing the second game of 2 x half’s of 10 minutes. Warrington’s team of seven started well with a goal from Bret Takemoto in fact Bret went on to get his hat trick in the first half as Royton couldnt think of a way of stopping him. Royton were still favorites as they scored five goals. The second half started well as Katie Bowater lead the way with a goal followed with a fourth from Bret and one from Marcus Wood made the score half way through the second half 6-6. Warrington showed great determination and stamina as Kate Bowater scored two goals and Bret Takemoto one with Royton scoring only one in reply. This was a great win for Warrington and the whole team deserve credit for a fantastic performance.

My thanks to GB international James Williams for coaching the team that day.

Warrington Team included Zack Williams, Katie Bowater (5), Bret Takemoto (9), Marcus Wood (2), Emily Ireland (1), Eleanor Brear. Total goals for both matches in ()

Royton 8 Warrington 18 (14 & u M&D League)

With only nine players including Katie Bowater from the 12 & under’s as Warrington U14s took on Royton in the Manchester & District League. Warrington attacked the team and showed no mercy with three goals in 90 seconds from Molly Boniface-Ashton, Dom Richards and Emily Bowater. Royton pulled one back before Ben Dailey scored to finish the quarter 4-1 up. Significantly Connor Lynch and Ben Dailey picked up personal fouls in the trick Royton Pool.

In the second half Warrington tried to attack the shallow end of this small pool. Royton gave away two exclusions but Warrington failed to convert this advantage into goals until half way through the second half when Connor Lynch scored to make it 1-5. Ben Daily was excluded a second time and Royton scored to bring the score to 2-5. What might be described as a water polo incident occurred which later transpired I nor the referee saw. This seemed unfair to exclude two players and they returned to the water and the game continued.  The table officials had to write quickly as four exclusions took place three against Royton and one against Warrington. Dom Richards who is getting stronger every game powered in a shot from 5 metres quickly followed by a goal from Molly Boniface-Ashton’ then Dom Richards secured his hat trick as Warrington moved up a gear. The 2nd quarter ended with a score line 3-8 to Warrington.

In the third quarter Royton scored first but as Warrington attacked the deep end again a goal feast ensued with goals from Emily Bowater, Molly Boniface-Ashton, Ben Daily and Dan Farini. Luke Atkinson playing in goal showed he is a great shot stopper but quickly converts defence into rapid attack with pin point passes sometimes three quarters the length of the pitch - outstanding distribution of the ball. With Ben Daily adding one more before the end of the quarter the score was 4-13 to Warrington and no exclusions to either side.

In the fourth quarter Royton fought back attacking the deep, they scored two quick goals as Warrington were caught on the counter attack before Molly Boniface-Ashton scored her fourth goal of the game and looks a real quality player. Connor Lynch was adjudged to have committed an exclusion foul which was his second of the match. Royton scored again before. Molly Boniface-Ashton scored her fifth to make the score 6 -15. Then Ben Dailey made it 6-16.  Molly was then excluded for the usual 20 second break and Royton took advantage of the power play within two seconds to make it 7-16. Young Dan Farini had started as sub soon added his second goal which he clearly enjoyed. The Connor Lynch picked up his third exclusion this can happen when playing in centre defence and Connor had been resolute in defence. With four minutes left the game continued Royton scored again but a short time later their goal keeper pushed the ball under water and a penalty was given. Dan Farini calmly converted the penalty to gain his hat trick.

The game finished 8-18 to Warrington and an excellent team performance including Matt Williams and Katie Bowater who played a significant part in the team’s success.

Warrington’s Team included Luke Atkinson (GK), Connor Lynch (1), Dom Richards (3), Ben Daily (4), Dan Farini (3), Molly Boniface-Ashton (5), Emily Bowater (2), Matt Williams and Katie Bowater.

M&D 12 & under tournament - Orford Park

Team Left to right Eleanor Brear, Emily Ireland, Katie Bowater, Brett Takemoto, (front) Zac Williams and Marcus WoodsWarrington ever improving 12 & under team took part in the first ever water polo tournament held at Orford Park. Playng across two pitches 5 teams took part and Warrington finished equal 3rd position.

Warrington in their final game played Royton in the final match which was a good test as we played them in the first game of the season in May and were beaten 11-2. In this game Warrington showed how much they have improved when they were narrowly beaten 3-2 by the same team and had plenty of chances to win the game. If they had they would have finished 2nd.Congratualtions to Tyldesley for winning the competition.

Well done to all the children involved and to the coaching team of Coutney Dean, Tom Costello and Su Bowater. My thanks also to all the parents who helped make the competition a great success. Nigel Dailey and Fiona Dean on the table, Sam Williams selling programmes Dave Williams coordinating the tables and of course our fantastic announcer Mr Woods who did a great job at very short notice. Finally I must thank Su and Mark Bowater for moving the goals from Sankey to Orford Park and back, a time consuming and tricky process.

We look to hold their own tournament in the autumn with a similar format. The idea of the forth coming ‘Festivals’ is to play low key games where officials not neccessarily qualified can practice being table official, referees and coaches. Also players normally too young ie under 10 will be allowed to play. A series of water polo festivals will take place over the coming months for children 12 & under over the next few months

Warrington 3 Tyldesley 9 (12&u) B&D League

Warrington’s 12 & under player their first competitive match against a strong 10 player team from Tyldesley. Many of the Warrington team were fairly new to water polo and only team captain Katie Bowater had played competitive games last year. It was with great surprise then that Warrington started well with a goal from Bret Takemoto. Zach Williams then powered through to make it 2-0 to Warrington and an unexpected lead. Tyldesley hit back quickly with two goals but the Warrington team had started well.

In the second half Warrington found it tough going as a strong Tyldesley side scored three consecutive goals Bret Takemoto scored to make the score 3-5 but Tyldesley went on to score four more goals as Warrington flagged the final score 3-9. Warrington are on a steep learning curve with a lot of matches in the coming weeks I predict they will be the most improved side by the end of the season. A new team is born and named ‘Whirlwinds’

Warrington 17 Royton 4 (14&u)

Warrington’s 14 & under team started their season off after a long break from competitive games with their first game in the Manchester & District League. Warrington started well with a goal from Molly Boniface-Ashton. Connor Lynch scored next as Warrington stated strongly attacking the shallow end. Royton hit back with a shot outside 5metres as the Warrington defence just sat off the Royton attacker. Warrington recovered well with further goals from Connor Lynch and Matt Williams, the quarter ended 4-1 to Warrington.

In the second quarter Warrington took advantage of attacking the deep as a Royton player was excluded Be Dailey scored from the man up within 7 seconds. Next to score were Warrington as Dom Richards playing at Centre forward found Royton’s goal. Emily Bowater then made it three goals in a minute with an excellently taken goal calmly finding the top corner of the goal. Royton were given a chance as Ben Dailey was excluded Warrington however defended the man up and ben re-joined the game. The goals kept coming as Emily Bowater scored her second, Molly Boniface-Ashton scored a second and the excellent Connor Lynch scored his hat trick or the more remarkable as Connor was playing in defence! Warrington’s seven goal spree made the half time score 11-1. I must say at this point that Warrington defended well not least Warrington’s goal keeper Luke Atkinson who intercepted  everything thrown at him and then quickly turned defence into attack with great distribution of the ball.

The third quarter started and Royton attacked the deep Royton who played with great determination the ever dangerous Sam Darlington scored for Royton. Warrington hit back with two goals as Ben Dailey scored his second and Connor Lynch his fifth goal! Royton continued to fight back and again Sam Darlington scored to make it 13-3. Warrington had started to rotate players as Emma Horne, Jake Williams and Luke Boardman had a taste of competitive water polo. Before the end of the quarter Emily Bowater and Molly Boniface-Ashton score their third goal each. Connor Lynch unusually was excluded at the end of the quarter but Warrington defended the man up. The quarter ended 15-3 to Warrington.

In the final quarter it was a time to rest some of Warrington’s first seven, to give others a chance to get wet. At the start of the quarter Ben Dailey was excluded after two minutes but then made up for it with his hat trick goal. Royton pulled one back as Sam Darlington scored his fourth goal. With three minutes to go Ben Dailey was wrapped up following his third exclusion but Warrington finished off the quarter with a goal from Matt Williams. The final score was 17-4, with Connor Lynch being Warrington’s best player an excellent team performance.

Royton had some players missing and played a relatively young team but should be praised for their efforts and particularly Sam Darlington who is an excellent player scoring all Royton’s goals.

Warrington’s Team included Luke Atkinson, Ben Dailey (3), Emma Horne, Dom Richards (1), Jake Williams, Emily Bowater (3), Matt Williams (2), Luke Boardman, Molly Boniface-Ashton (3), and Connor Lynch (5).

Warrington 2 Royton 11 (12&u)

Warrington’s 12 & under soon to be known as Warrington Whirlwinds took on a strong Royton side in their first competitive game for most of our players. Only Team Captain Katie Bowater played last season. The game consisting of two ten minute half’s started well for Royton with some excellent attacking play which saw Royton build a significant lead. Emily Ireland, Warrington’s player of the month scored her first goal in a competitive game but at half time Warrington trailed 1-6. In the second half it was more of the same with Royton’s strong players bursting through and scoring far too easily. Marcus Woods managed to grab a goal and the half ended 1-5 and the final score 2-11. Katie Bowater worked tirelessly to try and support attack and defence and was Warrington’s best player. The Warrington team contain’s a lot of potential and much was learnt about where improvements could be made. The team coached by Courtney Dean and Tom Costello have plenty to work on over the coming weeks and months but I’m sure all will have a lot of fun playing games and getting better and better with each match. Next stop Manchester Festival.
