Southport 3 Warrington 16 (Snr)

Warrington visited Southport in the Liverpool & District League. With Tom Hadley and James Williams just back from International duty Warrington had a strong ten man team. Warrington started well as they attacked the shallow end with a goal from Matt Webber. However Southport pulled one back. Then Tom ‘the hammer’ Hadley showed his class with an excellent goal to make it 1-2. Southport then had a player excluded and Warrington converted the man up another goal from Tom Hadley. James ‘the under-graduate’ Williams rounded off a good quarter with Warrington’s fourth goal to make it 1-4.

In the second quarter Tom Hadley continued to score at will on the counter attack as did James Williams. Peter Burke then hit a rich vein of form with three goals in four and a half minutes; Tom Hadley added his fourth of the game as Warrington went on the rampage and ended the first half 1-10 ahead.

The third quarter we rotated players around the get the junior players involved. A less eventful quarter as Warrington attacked a very shallow end. My moment of the match was to see Tom Costello (15 years) marking a huge Southport player and Tom defending defiantly. Sam Cooper did some excellent work in defence and supported the counter attacks well. However Warrington’s goals came from Connor Dean and Matt Webber and Southport pulled a goal back, the third quarter finished 2-12.

In the fourth quarter Tom Hadley and James Williams were rested but Warrington continued to score with goals from Connor Dean, Matt Webber and just as James jumped back in he managed to get his hat trick goal. Paul Daintith shot powerfully from 5 metres to score Warrington 16th goal.

In the dying second’s Southport scored to make the final score 3-16. It was a confident performance by Warrington.

Warrington’s Team included Andrew Burke (3), Sam Cooper, Tom Hadley (4), James Williams (3), Dave Price (1), Connor Dean (1), Ian Musgrove, Tom Costello, Matt Webber(3) and Paul Daintith (1).

Warrington 7 Chester 5 (Snr)

Warrington’s senior team continued their Liverpool & District campaign when Chester visited Great Sankey. Warrington fielded an 11 strong team, a mixture of youth and experience. Chester had the better start as Warrington defended the deep end with a goal after 30 seconds of play. Chester then had a player excluded but Warrington missed the chance to go level power play still an area of weakness. Chester went onto to score two more goals and have another player excluded but again Warrington didn’t take advantage of the man up. The quarter ended 0-3 and plenty to discuss in the team talk.

A quick discussion about double marking the Chester centre forward and half bath press and a further discussion about counter attack water polo took care of the 2 minute team talk. The quarter started well as Chester had two players excluded and Warrington pulled one back with a Dave Price goal. Dave was shortly after excluded but Chester could not score and the half time score was 1-3.

The third quarter would be important and require solid defence from Warrington. The quarter started with young Tim Mainwaring being excluded but Chester were kept from scoring with some excellent defensive work with Peter Burke in goal. Warrington hit back with a goal from Addison Brown to make it 2-3. Chester had another exclusion awarded against them, but again Warrington did not convert the advantage into a goal. Towards the end of the quarter Connor Dean scored an important goal to make it 3-3 at the end of the third quarter.

The game was finely balanced but Warrington would attack the deep end in the final quarter usually an advantage. The quarter started well with a goal from Addison Brown after 15 seconds. Tom ‘the hammer’ Hadley added another goal as Warrington hit Chester on the counter attack. Warrington were then awarded a penalty but Tom Hadley hit the post and the score remained 5-3. That encouraged Chester and as Connor Dean was excluded it looked like the game could take another twist. Chester had a time out recognising how crucial the next 20 seconds of play would be. On the restart Chester scored to make it 5-4. Tom Hadley upped his game and scored his second as Chester struggled to contain him. Then another Chester player was excluded and Tom Hadley converted the man up within two seconds, making it a hat trick for Tom in one quarter and a 7-4 lead for Warrington. Just to keep it interesting Dave Price impeded a Chester player and was excluded but with only 9 seconds on the clock however the game was won. Chester converted the man up to make the final score 7-5 and an excellent victory for Warrington.

Warrington defended well in the last three quarters of the game conceding only two goals with great goal keeping from Neil Musgrove and Peter Burke. Chester finished fourth last season one place above Warrington in the L&D league so an important victory for an improving Warrington team. Warrington played two under 16 players Tom Costello and Sam Cooper who both played at least a quarter each and Tim Mainwaring 17 years playing a significant role in the game. A good investment in the furture.

Warrington’s Team included Peter Burke, Sam Cooper, Addison Brown (2), Tom Hadley (3), Dave Price (1), Connor Dean (1), Ian Musgrove, Tim Mainwaring, Tom Costello, Neil Musgrove and Andrew Burke.

Warrington 17 Port Sunlight 3 (Snr)

Warrington played their fourth match of the 2014 season in the Liverpool & District League when they hosted Port Sunlight. Warrington with a strong line up started the first quarter attacking the shallow end. Warrington started well with a well taken goal from Ian Musgrove. However Port Sunlight took advantage of some slack marking at 8 metres and scored two long range goals. Warrington trailed 2-1 but no need to panic with team talk instructions for a half bath press and double marking the Port Sunlight centre forward.

The second quarter started with a goal to Port Sunlight not the start we wanted. Warrington started their come back with a goal from Tom Hadley followed by a goal from the excellent Addison Brown. Addison quick scored again and Ian Musgrove made it four goals to Warrington without reply to make it 5-3 to the home side. Port Sunlight had a player excluded and Warrington promptly scored from the man up with a goal from Ian Musgrove. With Warrington looking comfortable we started to introduce the younger players with Tom Costello playing faultlessly. Addison Brown continued to look a class act with his third goal of the game as Port Sunlight struggled to contain his quick movement. Warrington won the quarter 6-1 and led the game 7-3.

The third quarter saw Warrington attack the shallow end and started well with a well taken goal by Connor Dean, really great to see Connor back in the Warrington team. Addison Brown was still prolific in attack and scored his fourth of the game as Warrington started to cruise. More junior players were added to the mix as Sam Cooper and new recruit Blue Wheeldon showed they could step up to senior level. A further goal from Matt Webber saw Warrington finish the third quarter 10-3 in front.

The fourth and final quarter saw another Port Sunlight player excluded for 20 seconds with Warrington again converting the man up with a Tom Hadley goal. Tom ‘the hammer’ Hadley quickly scored his third goal of the game to make it 12-3. Then with four minutes left to play Blue Wheeldon scored a great goal from the right wing. Further goals from Connor Dean and Peter Burke saw he score move to 15-3. A penalty was then awarded to Warrington and converted by Tom Hadley and Warrington’s final goal came ironically from man of the match Addison Brown, the final score 17-3 to Warrington.

It was a great performance from a Warrington team with some great passing and movement and the junior boys growing in confidence by the match. Warrington will have a tough test next week when they play Chester at home.

Warrington’s team included: Neil Musgrove, Tom Costello, Ian Musgrove (3), Matt Webber (1), Tom Hadley (4), Addison Brown (5), Paul Daintith, Connor Dean, Sam Cooper, Peter Burke, Blue Wheeldon (1).

Warrington 8 Birkenhead 17 (Snr)

Warrington took on a strong and experienced Birkenhead side after being beaten 12-4 when we played them away in February. We had a stronger team this time and hoped for a better performance. Warrington went a goal down as we defended the shallow end but quickly equalised through Addison Brown. Birkenhead scored two more goals but again Warrington fought back with a goal from Tom Hadley and a second goal from Addison Brown. At 3-3 Warrington were working hard and looking just as good as Birkenhead. An exclusion foul was then awarded against Birkenhead but Warrington failed to score on the man up, Birkenhead counter attacked and scored. They added a fifth goal with 5 seconds to go and finished the quarter 3-5 ahead.

In the second quarter Warrington defended the deep end. Birkenhead scored first with their centre forward being difficult to contain. Birkenhead had another player excluded Warrington failed to score from the man up again but managed to pull one back a minute latter with a goal from Peter Burke to make it 4-6. Birkenhead then scored two further goals Warrington pulled one back with a goal from Tom Hadley but were finding it difficult against a strong and experienced Birkenhead side. Birkenhead had another player sin binned and Warrington again failed to take advantage of the man up. Birkenhead scored on the counter attack to make it 5-9. Dave Price was then excluded and Birkenhead converted the man up. Birkenhead then added another goal but then had another player excluded in a familiar pattern Warrington failed to convert the man up and Birkenhead counter attacked and scored again making the half time score 5-12.

I the third quarter Birkenhead again had a player excluded and at last the man up was converted by Addison Brown. Birkenhead continued to score adding two more goals before Andrew Burke was excluded for 20 seconds but Warrington defended the man up. However Birkenhead scored a minute later. Another Birkenhead player was excluded and Warrington scored to make it 7-15 at the end of the third quarter.

In the final quarter Birkenhead conceded three further exclusions but we converted only one man up before Birkenhead scored two further goals. The final score was 8-17 with Birkenhead conceding 9 exclusion fouls to Warrington’s 5. Birkenhead tended to convert their man ups and Warrington tended not to, if we had the game would have been very close.

Warrington’s team included: Neil Musgrove, Ian Musgrove (1), Dave Price, Matt Webber, Tom Hadley (2), Addison Brown (4), Tim Mainwaring, Sam Cooper, Peter Burke (1), Andrew Burke, Tom Costello.

Boys finish 2nd in L&D tournament

On Sunday 23rd February Warrington’s 16 & under team played in the Liverpool & District tournament held at Liverpool Aquatic Centre. The tournament was a fixture left over from 2013 so players born 1997 could play.

Warrington had a small team of eight players including Luke Atkinson, Ben Dailey and Dom Richard who played for the 12 & under team last year.

The first game was against Southport with each game consisting of two halves of six minutes a good start was important. Ben Dailey scored the first goal with Stanley Mainwaring adding a second. Warrington although ahead struggled to link passes together it was clear that we were short of match practice. In the second half we started to get earlier passes made and were finding the free player. The second half saw two goals from Tim Mainwaring and further goals from Ben Dailey, Stanley Mainwaring and Jacob Wass. The final score was 7-1 to Warrington.

It was a great start but we knew we could play better and needed to play better if we were going to win the tournament.  Luke Atkinson had complete control of his goal area and contributed significantly to Warrington conceding very few goals.

In the next game we faced Chester.

We started well with a goal from Tim Mainwaring but Chester quickly equalised. Jacob Wass got his shooting sorted out and scored to put Warrington 2-1 ahead. Again Chester equalised but again Jacob struck back to make it 3-2. With 13 seconds left Warrington conceded a penalty and Chester converted the penalty. The 3-3 score line showed we needed to be more organised in defence and to pass the ball quicker in attack.  The second half started as the first half did with a goal from Tim Mainwaring. Ben Dailey was next to score as Warrington looked much improved. a Chester player was excluded and Warrington converted the power play through Tom Costello to make it 6-3. Three goals in two minutes as Warrington showed great improvement in taking their chances.

Tim Mainwaring scored again and Jacob Wass scored two, to help Warrington win the quarter 6-0 and the game 9-3.

The final game was against Bridgefield who had quite a few Lancaster players in their team. It was a tough game with Warrington struggling to contain Bridgefield on the break. In the first half Bridgefield scored four goals despite the save of the tournament from Luke Atkinson. Bridgefield had three players excluded but Warrington could not score from the man up.

In the second half Warrington started to come into the game and had several chances to score but failed to convert the chances. We restricted Bridgefield to two goals which showed we were improving as we played. The final score was 6-0 to Bridgefield.

All the boys played really well and our younger players Dom, Ben and Luke showed they could hold their own at 16 and under. Warrington finished second overall which is a good performance. Well done boys!

It was clear they all need more games over the coming weeks in preparation for the 2014 season.

Warrington team included Luke Atkinson, Jacob Wass, Tim Mainwaring, Adam farini, Tom Costello, Stan Mainwaring, Ben Dailey, Dom Richard.

Ben Dailey and Connor Lynch are to be congratulated on being selected for the North West Region 15 & under squad which is quite an achievement considering both boys are still only 12 years old.
