Alan & Tony recognised for 120 years service to our club


Left to right Yvonne Boyle Dr Alan Boyle, Mayor Peter Carey, Tony Burke, Patricia BurkeThe Mayor of Warrington Peter Carey recognised the service given to Warrington Swimming Club by Tony Burke and Dr Alan Boyle, by inviting them and their wives to afternoon tea and presenting them with a plaque to mark their services to swimming and water polo.
Both Alan and Tony were formerly water polo players in the 1950’s when large crowds would watch water polo at the former Warrington Baths in Legh Street. For over sixty years Alan has played, coached, tutored, refereed, and administered swimming and water polo at all levels from grass roots to highest levels within the regional and national governing bodies. In 1970 Alan Boyle joined the management committee of Warrington Swimming Club and in 1976 became Head Water Polo Coach. Alan also became a member of the ASA (Amateur Swimming Association) Council in 2000 and serves ASA to this day specialising in Constitutional Affairs. Alan continues to head Warrington Swimming Club committee as Chairman.
 
Tony Burke was a top class water polo goal keeper and played at County level, also served as Warrington Swimming Clubs Treasurer for 50 years (1963 –2013) retiring at the end of 2013. In  total both men have served the club as players and officials for over 120 years with many swimmers and players owing a lot to their contribution both men have made as volunteers.
 
Warrington Swimming & Water Polo Club as a long history of producing international water polo players including most recently Olympian Hazel Musgrove, junior international Courtney Dean and Tom Hadley all of whom were coached as juniors by Alan Boyle.
