16&u M&D. Chester 5 - 25 Warrington

Chester vs Warrington 16 and Under Manchester and District League Match

1st Quarter

Warrington started attacking the shallow end.  They started quickly with Dominic having a backhand shot and Conor shooting wide.  Emily was fouled and a penalty was awarded.  Dominic threw a thunderbolt shot in to the top corner, not giving he goalkeeper any chance.  Emily did some good defending.  Some great play created the next goal, Luke did a long pass to Conor who passed to Dan and back to Conor who scored.  The Chester keeper made a great save from Matt. Stanley set up Ben to score in the bottom corner.  Chester scored with just over 3 and half minutes of the quarter remaining. Chester had a player wrapped up for a 3rd exclusion. Adam scored with a great backhand shot.  Chester replied to make the quarter end score 2-4.

2nd Quarter

Warrington started the second quarter with Dominic scoring into the bottom corner after 20 seconds of the quarter.  Ben scored 30 seconds later.  Luke did a long pass to Conor who set up Dominic for another goal.  Ben scored another goal and shortly after Luke passed to Emily who passed to Stanley to score.  Adam did a great pass to set up Brett to score.  A long pass from Luke to Adam, who set up Conor to score with a shot that came of the far post.  Warrington were awarded a penalty which the keeper saved from Emma.  Emma was then down the other of the pool doing some great defending.  Dominic came close hitting the post and shortly after scored.

Emily had a great shot which looked like a certain goal, the Chester keeper who had a great game tipped it on to the post.  Stanley swam really fast to take the ball from a Chester playing who was through on goal. Katie was also doing some good defensive work. Stanley was then using his speed in attack to set up Matt to score making the score 2-15 at the end of the quarter.

Quarter 3

Warrington were awarded a penalty which the Chester keeper saved from Emily.  Chester scored and then Warrington did some great play with Conor passing to Emily who set up Dominic for a goal from a backhand shot.  Ben set Conor up for a goal.  Warrington came under pressure at the back, Katie did some great defensive work when she was 2 on to 1. Emma did well to keep the ball when under a lot of pressure, Matt and Adam also did good defensive work.  Warrington swiftly moved into attack with Luke passing to Conor, who passed on to Matt to score. Matt and Dan did some good defensive work at the end of the quarter to stop Chester scoring. The quarter ended 3-18.

Quarter 4

Warrington started quickly again attacking the deep end.  Dominic scoring in the first 20 seconds and Dan scoring with some good play from Dominic and Ben.  Katie was excluded for getting a piggy back from one of the Chester players, who stood up with Katie still on his back, much to the amusement of the Warrington substitutes.

Luke made another great save.  Ben scored 2 goals in quick succession, the second was a great team effort.  Conor set up Stanley for a goal.  Luke passed to Conor, who passed to Emma, who had a good shot which hit the far post.  Emily set up Stanley for a goal.  Chester had some attacks right at the end, scoring 2 late goals. Luke got a hand to the first, the second was a great backhand shot which took everyone by surprise.  Emily had played very well and she brought a great save out of the Chester keeper right at the end.  The final score was 5-25.

Another good team performance. James did well rotating all the players to ensure that they all stayed fresh.

Great Performance by 12u team at Bridgefield

12&U B&D Bridgefield 9 – Warrington 8
Warrington played a tight game on Thursday against Bridgefield away, narrowly missing out on a win.
Bridgefield were mob handed with a full 10 players whilst Warrington mustered 6, down from an original 7 after Eleanor Brear had to drop out due to illness. Playing 2 halves of 10 mins with no subs was going to be tough.
Warrington started off strong in the first half with some great play and Joe Weston securing the first goal. Warrington were a man-up after a Bridgefield exclusion but were not able to convert the advantage, then Louis Stowell was briefly excluded but Warrington managed not to concede a goal in this time. End to end skirmishes followed with attempts on goal from both sides, and Warrington battling well for possession. Katy Bowater, playing up the centre, fed some great passes forward and also provided a great defence for Warrington, closing down several Bridgefield runs on goal. Marcus Woods, put in some good shots but was unlucky. Leo Kilpatrick in goal for Warrington kept Bridgefield in check until the final few minutes of the first half when Bridgefield equalised, and shortly after they banged another one in to take a 2-1 lead. Marcus took it back to 2-2 with another goal for Warrington, but Bridgefield managed to claim another in the final seconds ending the first half 3-2 to Bridgefield.
Second half started with a Bridgefield exclusion in the first minute which Warrington were unable to take advantage of, and a Bridgefield goal shortly after. Then Bridgefields goalie deflected a close range shot from Louis leading to a scrabble for possession in the Bridgefield goal area – Louis won the ball back and scored for Warrington taking it to 4-3. Emily Ireland demonstrated some great tackling, closing down any Bridgefield attempts to pass her and setting up Katy, Joe and Marcus for Warrington shots on goal. Jo narrowly missed one scooting it just inches past the Bridgefield post on the opposite side of him, and Marcus bounced one off the crossbar. Katy got the next one levelling the score to 4-4. Midway through the second half Warrington enjoyed a great run – Louis put another one in, then Marcus scored and Louis grabbed another taking us 4-7 up. With just a minute and a half to go Warrington were looking comfortable. Bridgefield clawed a point back, then Marcus got one back for us, then with one minute left on the clock Bridgefield took it to 6-8 – Warrington still looked good. With 15 seconds to go Leo, in Warringtons goal, deflected a powerful shot from Bridgefield which landed right on the goal line – Leo scooped it away but the ref called it in Bridgefields favour taking it to 7-8, then Bridgefield equalised with three seconds left and Warrington were unable to get a final shot in before the final whistle.
Teams regrouped for a breather before penalties – Emily, struggling with a knee injury bravely got back in the pool in order that Warrington could field 5 players for penalty shots. After 3 penalties each, no goals had been scored – a skim shot from Marcus looked like it was going to secure victory but Bridgefields Goalie just managed to get to it . Leo under huge pressure pulled of some incredible saves, but with both teams running out of penalty shots Bridgefield got the goal they needed to win the match 9-8.
Warrington, outnumbered, had played a fantastic, exciting and spirited game throughout and were able to leave Bridgefield with their heads held high. Special mention though, should go to Warrington Goalkeeper Leo Kilpatrick, who put in a brilliant selfless, performance for his team – well done!

Warrington Girls Help North West to inter regional triumph.

North West dominated at the inter regional girls 2000+ finals at Liverpool this weekend. Here are some photos of the Warrington girls at the tournament, NW lightening won and NW Thunder came second which was a great result for NW quite clearly the strongest region in the UK.  Katie and Emma played for Lightening and Emily played for Thunder. Molly still had hamstring problems and so had to remain poolside as assistant to Team Manger. Great for Warrington that we have so many girls shortlisted for this event. Well done girls, doing the club proud.

Senior L&D. Chester 10 - 16 Warrington

The senior team continued their league campaign with a trip to Chester university pool to play Chester City. The first challenge was finding the pool in the university campus. Some players cut it really fine but we made the start with only Neil Musgrove unavailable as he had broken down on the motorway. Warrington welcomed back old player Patrick Horgan after his university exploits now as a qualified doctor. New signing Ollie also made his debut.

The first quarter featured goals from Tom Hadley, Andy Burke, Addison Brown and two from Ollie and three goals from Chester saw the quarter finish 3 - 5 to Warrington. Warrington looked rusty in defence especially but this was to improve through the game.

The second quarter had Warrington attacking the shallow end. This was a much closer affair has Warrington still struggled to get to grips with their outside shooters. Goals from Tom Hadley and Addison meant it finished as a 2-2 draw and the overall score still close at 5 - 7.

The third quarter saw Warrington back attacking the deep end. Goals came from Tom Hadley, Addison, Andy Burke and two from James Barker after he found his shooting arm after injury. Warrington restored their advantage winning the quarter 2 - 5, taking the score to 7 - 12 going into the final quarter.

Quarter four featured goals again from Addison, Andy Burke, Tom Hadley and new boy Ollie. Warrington saw the opportunity to change things around and won the quarter 3 - 4. Final score 10 - 16. A good win with a few players taking a beating from the Chester players for their efforts. A physical game not ideal for Tom Hadley’s sun burn left a number of players battered a bruised but it was the win the mattered on onto Port Sunlight at home next week. This puts the senior team on 7 wins and 3 losses with 4 games to play for the season.

Team P. Burke, T Hadley (4), A. Burke (3), T. Costello, S. Cooper, J. Barker (2), D. Price, O. Rhodes (3), T. Mainwaring, P. Horgan, A. Brown (4).

14&u M&D. Tyldesley 2 - 18 Warrington

Tyldesley vs Warrington 14 and Under Manchester and District League Match

1st Quarter

Ben scored on the break.  Dominic scored from a well worked move.  Luke did a long pass to Dominic, who scored to make it 0-3. Luke again was provider, setting up Conor to score with a long pass.  Ben showed good strength to hold of a defender to make the score 0-5 at the end of the quarter. There were a lot of exclusions in the first quarter, 4 for Warrington and 3 for Tyldesley.  Conor was already on 2 exclusions and was moved from defence to play a more attacking role.

2nd Quarter

Conor was on the break from the start and got pulled back. Dominic scored from the resultant penalty.  Warrington were awarded another penalty.  As Dominic was about to take, his dad Larry said he wouldn’t score - wrong - Dominic put in the top corner.   Emma had an attempt saved by the keeper.  Tyldesley hit the bar on an attack.  Ben was then excluded and to our surprise was wrapped up.  It was only his second exclusion.  Tyldesley scored a goal.  They put Warrington under pressure and it was only good defensive work from Katie that saved another chance. Tyldesley pressured the Warrington defence, it was Dan this time that saved them.  Score at the end of the quarter 1-7.

Quarter 3

Conor could again play a more defensive role as he was only marked down as one exclusion.

Dominic scored 2 goals and then showed good strength to get a pass to Conor who scored.  Riley did some great defensive work.  Luke made some good saves.  The score was 1-11 at the end of the quarter.

Quarter 4

Brett scored early in the quarter, followed shortly after by Dominic.  Warrington were awarded a penalty for a foul on Conor, from which Dominic made it a hat trick of penalties.  Conor was on the break and managed to hold off the defender to score with a backhand shot to make it 1-15.  Tyldesley had a player wrapped up with just over 3 minutes of the match remaining.  Alfie tried a long range shot which went over the bar, this was just to get his eye in as he then scores with a great shot in to the top corner. Dominic did an impressive turn and swam in to score.  He was again in the score sheet after a hard long range shot.  With a couple of seconds left of the match left Tyldesley hit the bar and managed to push the ball over the line to make the final score 2-18.

Another good team performance. The newer players did well and are getting more integrated in to the team.

3rd Quarter

Bridgefield again started well, scoring in the first 30 seconds.  Bridgefield then went close, only being stopped by a good defensive block from Conor.  Brett was playing well on the right wing and he was dropping quickly to defend. Bridgefield then had a shot saved on to the bar by Luke.  Warrington then went on the attack and brought a good save from Bridgefield keeper.  It was then Luke’s turn to produce another good save.  The standard from both keepers was very high.  Warrington defended well as a unit, dropping quickly to defend deeply throughout the quarter. Dan and Katie both defended well. The quarter ended 4-7.

Yet again Bridgefield started quickly scoring early to take the scores to 5-7.  Conor scored with a long range shot and then Bridgefield replied finding space to score through a packed defence with a long range shot.  Bridgefield rounded off a good move with a goal to make a close end to the game, with the score at 7-8.  Ben then scored to restore the 2 goal lead, with a shot in to the far top corner, from the wing to make it 7-9.  Conor did some great defensive work to get the goal back to Luke when chasing back between two Bridgefield players.  Luke had a long range shot which fell a couple of metres short as the match ended.

Warrington led 2-1 at the end of the quarter.

2nd Quarter

Both teams continued to defend well in the first 3 minutes of the 2nd quarter.  Conor scored after 3 minutes with a good shot from the right in to the top left hand corner and Dominic scored after 4 minutes.  Dan did some great defensive play, he picked up his 2nd exclusion after 4 minutes. Quick thinking by Ben and Conor after Ben got fouled, he passed to Conor who lobbed it back to Ben to palm the ball into the net making the score 5-1.  Luke made a series of good saves.  Dominic, in good goal scoring form, scored another with a minute of the quarter remaining, with a great long range shot.  Conor was wrapped up a few seconds later, having given away the penalty in the first quarter and 2 quick exclusions.  Conor paid the price for a good Centre Back performance.  Good defensive play from Warrington with the quarter ending 6-1.

Senior L&D. Warrington 6 - 7 Liverpool

Warrington were looking to bounce back from defeat to Bridgefield last week with a home game against Liverpool. Last season saw Warrington beat Liverpool for the first time since the 1980’s. They were hoping to repeat the feat but knew Liverpool would be fired up for revenge. Liverpool brought a strong team and Warrington were slighlty under strength but definitely felt they had the quality to make it a close match.

It turned out to be one of the closest and exciting games of the season. The first quarter saw Liverpool take the lead after an exclusion foul by Sam Cooper. James Barker continued where he left off and scored another excellent goal. Liverpool scored again and Warrington failed to convert two ‘man up’ situations, but did defend a man down well too. It finished 1 - 2 to Liverpool.

The second quarter saw Warrington take a grip of the game and goals from James Barker, Tom Hadley and David Price saw them take the quarter 3 - 1 and move to 4 - 3 ahead in the match. However Warrington again missed two from three ‘man up’ opportunities. This quarter also saw one of the senior members of the Liverpool team wrapped up for jumping back into the pool after an exclusion. A rookie error but showed the tension building in this match as he clearly forgot himself.

The third quarter was again another good one for Warrington attacking the shallow end. Addison Brown was taking a mauling in the pit area and onlookers were surpised not to see more exclusion fouls against the Liverpool team. Another goal from Tom Hadley saw Warrington move to 5 - 3 ahead. James Barker showed his lack of sublty in a blantant pull back and was exlcuded and Warrington conceded from the ‘man down’ situation. Warrington missed another ‘man up’ situation and you can see a theme starting here. However they converted an extra man situation at the end of the quarter through Andy Burke. Warrington were now ahead 6 - 4 going into the last quarter.

Warrington knew they had the victory in sight and perhaps it was this that was there undoing. It was clear from the ‘hair drier’ treatment the Liverpool team were getting during their team talk they would be up for it in the last quarter. The Liverpool experience really showed here as one player sold a dummy to the referees to get David Price excluded and Liverpool scored the extra man goal. Liverpool scored another goal after an exclusion from James Barker. The score was now level at 6 - 6 and Warrington were on the back foot. After a passage of play were Liverpool had 3 successive attacks without Warrington being able to clear the ball Liverpool took the lead with just over 2 minutes left to play. The experienced Liverpool team then just sat back and stifled the game to see the game out for the win.

Warrington were gutted to lose but played extremely well and it shows the progression of the senior team to take such a strong Liverpool team so close. Tim Mainwaring, Sam Cooper and Tom Costello all had excellent games against much bigger and physically stronger opposition. It was good to see David Price and Andy Burke get onto the score sheet. James Barker has clearly found his shooting range and if that form continues he could challenge the top scorers. Tom Hadley showed a return to scoring ways with two good goals and Addison lead the line well and although he did not score he took a beating for the team in the pit. Warrington missed the extra experience that would of come from the one or two senior players missing and must do better when converting ‘man up’ opportunities. Warrington converted only 3 from 7 chances compared to the 4 from 5 converted by Liverpool. Next game is Southport away and hopefully a return to winning ways for Warrington.

12&U B&D. Bridgefield 22 - 5 Warrington

Still rebuilding their team after losing several of their more experienced players to the 14&U age group, Warrington 12&U’s bravely took on polished local rivals Bridgefield, on Thursday night at Speke Leisure Centre.

Bridgefield set the tone early on securing four consecutive goals in rapid succession, putting Warrington under immediate pressure and keeping gameplay firmly in Warrington’s half of the pool. Warrington’s Joseph Weston, eager to prove himself in his first match, was in the thick of the action, vigorously chasing the ball up and down the pitch with dogged determination. Joseph had the opportunity to catch his breath however when an overenthusiastic tackle saw him briefly sent out of the game.
Marcus Woods offered loud vocal support to his team to ensure good positioning was maintained but Warrington struggled to gain any advantage whatsoever under Bridgefields fierce dominance. They chalked up an impressive 7 - 0 lead in the first quarter with no less than 5 of the Bridgefield players able to say they had scored.

Coach Tom Costello clearly found some inspiring words, as the second quarter saw Warrington return to play with renewed ambition. There was a marked increase in possession from Warrington, with some intense skirmishes and a slew of fouls in their favour, opening up opportunities for good attempts on goal from Marcus Woods and Joseph Weston. It was a close range goal from Louis Stowell that put them on the scoreboard, boosting team morale. Under greater pressure now, Bridgefield’s goal rate was diminished with them securing just four goals in this quarter versus three from Warrington - a second and consecutive goal from Louis Stowell, coupled with a cheeky one from Marcus Woods who casually rolled the ball across Bridgefield’s goal line.

Bridgefield came back strong in the third quarter, closely marking their opponents and intercepting several attempts from a frustrated Zak Kilpatrick, playing wing, to pass to his teammates. Zak and Eleanor Brear were both kept busy defending Bridgefield runs on Warrington’s goal, but Bridgefield’s score increased rapidly despite the very best efforts of Oliver Naughalty, who had volunteered as Goalie in place of regular Leo Kilpatrick (unable to play due to injury). A powerful shot from Marcus Woods gained another goal for Warrington but it was Bridgefield, back to earlier form, who prevailed securing six goals in the quarter.

Bridgefield’s success continued into the final quarter as Warrington, showing signs of fatigue, struggled to keep pace.  It seemed like every Bridgefield player wanted a piece of the action with four of their players picking up a further five more goals between them. It was a smooth final play from Warrington however that stood out with some really well executed, fast passes up the pitch finding Marcus Woods raised hand. Marcus finished the play with a defiant slam of the ball into the back of Bridgefield’s net, demonstrating that Warrington certainly have the potential to give Bridgefield a much tougher game next time around.

Final score Bridgefield 22 - 5 Warrington

Also well done to Ben Dailey who helped Manchester to the U17 boys silver medal http://www.swimming.org/waterpolonationals/sedgefield-edge-thrilling-boys-u17-final/.

Warrington take pride in developing young players and seeing them go on to play nationally and internationally whilst still representing Warrington locally.

16&U Friendly. Warrington 33 - 4 Chester

Both teams had the majority of the players from their 14 and Under teams.
Warrington started very quickly with Stanley scoring in 13 seconds. The team played some great Water Polo scoring 5 goals in the first 3 minutes. They took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter before Chester scored making it 7-1 at the end of the  quarter. Scorers were Conor, Emily(2), Ben and Stanley(3).
Warrington continued to play well in the second quarter, scoring 11 goals without reply. Scorers were Brett(2), Dominic, Emily, Ben(2) and Stanley(5).
Chester played their best Water Polo in the 3rd quarter. Warrington scored twice with Brett and Emma, Chester scored, before Warrington scored a further 4 goals, Ben scoring in the last second of the quarter. Scorers were Conor, Brett, Dominic(2), Ben and Emma.
In the 4th quarter Luke wanted to put all his swimming training to use; so he handed the red cap to Dominic. Both players did well in their unfamiliar positions. Luke scoring a goal and winning a penalty. Dominic pulling off a string of good saves. Chester showed a lot of spirit in the last quarter, creating chances and hitting the bar. Katie hit the bar twice in one play looking for her first goal. Warrington were awarded a penalty from which Katie scored. Dan scored another penalty with Warrington scoring 10 and Chester 1 in the quarter. Scorers were Luke, Conor, Brett(3), Katie, Emily and Dan(3).
