Warrington polo players have been making a mark at Local, Regional and National level.
Senior Team Beat Birkenhead
The senior team have made history by beating the Birkenhead senior team who play in the top flight of the National league by a margin of 13-10 at Great Sankey. The last time we beat Birkenhead was twenty years ago in 1987, and before that it was 1948.
The result marks the steady improvement and strength and depth of the squad, with several of the senior team being recruited as part of the youth training scheme at the club.
County Champions
The 16 and under team have won the Cheshire County league for the third season in a row. In the final two leg tie they took a narrow two goal advantage into the away leg at Chester. After a disastrous first period the team were losing by a seven goal margin, and therefore losing on aggregate over the two legs. In a really hard fought game the team clawed their way back and on three occasions drew level, before falling behind. In the end the match was drawn at 17-17 after a tense final period of play to win the tie and championship. The Dr David Cook memorial trophy was presented to Warrington along with winners medals.
Regional Training
As part of the National development programme, Regional training centres have been set up to feed into the National training programme. In the 93/94 age group Warrington have three players: Courtenay Dean, Helen Rex and Bryn Edwards and in the 91/92 age group there is Daniel Need.
National Youth Squad
Five Warrington players have been selected from Regional trials and are now training hard over Easter as part of the Great Britain Youth Squad at Millfield: Lauren Whitney, Nicola Garner, Kirsty Garner and Emma Bartlett for the Youth Women and Conor Dean for the Youth boys.
Great Britain Junior Team
Two other Warrington players have been selected to play for Great Britain over the next two weeks. Hazel Musgrove has been selected to play for the Great Britain junior Women’s team in the six Nations Cup, Felgueiras 10 = 15 April in Portugal.

Warrington Swimming Club Water Polo Team Triumph Again
On Sunday the 14 and under team won Manchester and District water polo tournament for their age group.. In the first round of the competition two weeks ago, they played against strong opposition drawing a close game with Stretford 4-4, and narrowly beating Radcliffe 1-0 and Failsworth by 5-4 to be in first place, with Failsworth being runners up after a play off with the other teams on the same points.. Warrington and Failsworth qualified as the top two teams and went through to the finals to meet Tyldesley and Royton who were the top two from the other weekend first round of competition.
Clearly the first weekend was much stiffer competition as Warrington cruised to 9-0 victory against Tyldesley in their first match. The re-match against Failsworth was much closer with Warrington winning 4-1, after Patrick Horgan in goal had made three excellent close range saves in quick succession to keep Warrington in the match. The Warrington side was confirmed as tournament winners after beating Royton by a comfortable 10-2 margin. They received the trophy and medals at the end of the tournament.
At this age group the teams are mixed and Warrington capitilised on this with six of the ten players in the squad being girls.
This year Warrington will be entering a girls only team in a new North West series of tournaments, so any girls who want to give it a try please come along to Great Sankey on a Saturday evening at 6:15pm after the Easter holidays

Warrington Swimming Club Water Polo Team end season Unbeaten
On Saturday evening the 16 and under team completed the season as unbeaten Champions with their tenth consecutive league victory in the Manchester and District championship. With a stronger team than last week and with home advantage the Warrington team started strongly against Failsworth and went into an early four goal lead. The team never looked back and eventually eased to a final winning score line of 21-8. The trophy and medals will be presented after the 14& under Manchester and district tournament finals on April 9th.
On Friday evening the 14 and under team took a slender one goal lead to Chester in the Cheshire league final. On this occasion with Chester having home advantage, and a much stronger and bigger side they beat the Warrington team by 25-8. Whilst it was disappointing to lose, all twelve players performed well and deserved the runners up medals. Over two thirds of the team are eligible to play in the same competition next year, so it was good experience and provides a solid foundation for the future. There next competition is the Manchester and District finals on the 2nd and 9th April.

Warrington Swimming Club Water Polo Team secure championship
On Saturday afternoon the 16 and under team continued their impressive unbeaten run and scored their ninth consecutive league victory in an exciting game to secure the Manchester and District championship. However it was no easy task with Warrington missing a number of experienced players, the team went 2-0 behind to Failsworth by the end of the first quarter. In the second period Warrington battled hard to bring the scores back to level terms, but then almost immediately conceded a further goal. Warrington received a tremendous boost as the seconds ticked away towards half time. Samir Tahraoui gained possession just over the half way line and fired a shot towards goal. As the whistle blew for the end of the period the ball bounced into the corner of the net to bring the scores back to level terms at three all. This seemed to dent the confidence of Failsworth. In the third period Warrington capitalised on indiscipline from the opposition and scored from man-up positions to take a 7-4 lead into the last quarter. With excellent defensive work from the whole team and good saves from Mark Waters in goal the team eased to a final winning score line of 10-5.
The remaining fixture next week is a formality with the league title now secured, the team will aim to complete the season with a 100% record.

On Friday of this week the 14 and under team play the second leg of the Cheshire Championship. They take a narrow 7-6 lead into the game and need to secure at least a draw to win the trophy.
Warrington Water Polo U16 team success continues
On Friday evening the 16 and under team played away at Tyldesley in the Manchester and District championship. They continued their impressive unbeaten run in this league and scored their eighth consecutive victory with a convincing margin of 22-6. This now means that they only need to gain one point from the remaining two fixtures to win the Manchester and District 16 and under championship.
On Saturday the16 and under team played in the second leg of Cheshire championship final against Chester at Great Sankey leisure centre. After winning the first away leg 18-8 late last year the team secured the trophy after a convincing 15-9 victory.

The run up to Christmas is a busy time for the teams as various leagues and cup competitions are being decided during this period.
On Thursday the senior side played against Stretford in the Bolton & District league Warrington went a goal down in the first minute. Warrington fought back and gained a narrow lead, which Stretford kept pegging back throughout the game. It was only in the last minute when Warrington scored that they were sure of winning a hard fought contest with a score of 11-9.
On Friday the 16 & under team played at Chester in the first leg of the Cheshire cup final. After a good first period Warrington took a commanding lead of 5-1. Chester fought back in the second period to narrow the gap to 8-5. Warrington turned on the pressure in the last two periods and came out as winners with a ten goal margin 18-8. They will take this cushion forward to the home leg of the final which is due to be played at the end of November.
On Saturday the 14 & under team played a friendly match against Tyldesley as a warm up for their Manchester & District winter league competition and came out convincing winners 18-3
On Sunday the 15 & under team played in the final and deciding game of the Manchester and District championship against Radcliffe. Having only lost one game to Radcliffe before this match, the result would determine who would become league champions. Warrington put on an excellent display, but in the end were beaten 16-12 by a stronger team on the day and were therefore runners up in the Championship.
Warrington Senior Liverpool and District Water Polo Champions
The Warrington senior team retained their Liverpool & District trophy after playing three games at the weekend. This was a tremendous achievement as the team only had the minimum seven players and five of these were from the junior 16 & under team. The juniors in fact scored nine out of the twelve goals in the competition which is great news for the future of the team.
In the first match Warrington had a comfortable victory against Port Sunlight
(formerly Bebington) winning 3-0. The second was a much tougher game against the eventual runners up with a winning margin of 5-3. In the last game against Southport Warrington won by 4-1.
Warrington were presented with the trophy and medals by Allan Murray the Secretary of the Liverpool and District Water Polo Committee

Hazel Musgrove Captains Winning Schools Team
The finals of the 6th annual girls inter divisional school championships were held at Walsall Gala baths on Sunday 8th May. Our local team the North West division had to play the Midlands and Greater Manchester. The North West division was captained by Hazel Musgrove from Bridgewater High, with three other local girls in the team- Abby Donnel Jones (Bridgwater High) Ciara Pinnington (The Heath, Widnes) andAlice Byrne (St Peter and Paul High, Widnes). In the first game Greater Manchester beat the Midlands by 5-1. In the second game The North West also played the Midlands and easily overhauled them with a comfortable 11-1 victory.
This left the final match against Greater Manchester to determine the champions.
Both teams had opportunities to score, with the North West coming closest after hitting the woodwork on two occasions. Hazel Musgrove scored an excellent goal while under pressure to break the deadlock and give a narrow lead at the end of the first quarter. After the nervous start the goal gave the North West a new impetus, and goals from Rebbecca Benson (Lancaster), Rebecca Kershaw(Heysham),and a second from Hazel Musgrove came without reply. The third period was more evenly matched with another goal from Rebecca Benson , before Greater Manchester pulled one back, after they had also missed a penalty. Going into the last period 5-1 ahead the result was never in doubt. Rebbecca Benson completed a fine hat trick, and Ciara Pinnington put her name on the score sheet before Greater Manchester scored a second consolation goal after some excellent saves by Jenny Quirk (Ormskirk) in the North West goal.
The North West won the game 7-2 to top the league table and become 2005 champions. They were presented with a trophy and medals.
Manchester & District u14 Tournament Final
The under 14 team played in the Manchester and District tournament final. The finals were on a league basis, with teams from Radcliffe, Failsworth and Royton.
In the first game against Royton, Warrington were trailing by five goals after the first period. In the second period Warrington rallied and came within three goals of Royton, before they scored near the end to win the game 12-8.
In the second game, this week Warrington proved too strong for Radcliffe and kept in front throughout the game to manage a victory by 11-8. The last game against Failsworth would therefore decide second and third place. At the end of the first period Warrington were a goal down, but the superior size of Failsworth gave them the advantage to win by 10-5.
The Warrington team collected their bronze medals, with Failsworth second and this years champions Royton. For Warrington this was a good result for a team that has only just starting playing together. They now look forward to playing in a number of leagues later this year.
Northern Counties Girls Win Inter District
The Northern Counties played in a weekend tournament for both boys under 16 and girls under 16 teams, to find the national district champions at Grantham and Cranwell. Rafik Tahraoui and Hazel Musgrove, both from Warrington had been selected to play for these teams.
Both the boys and girls Northern Counties teams came through the Saturday qualification league to end up in the final on Sunday. The boys team was beaten by the South, but the highlight was the girls winning by a narrow 6-4 margin, with two important goals being scored by local girl Hazel Musgrove.
Manchester 16& under play off final- Warrington top scorer, but Warrington lose final
With both Warrington and Radcliffe ending the league season on equal points, a play off was required to determine the winner of the Manchester and District league. The game was held at a neutral venue in Manchester in front an enthusiastic crowd. The game was closely fought, but Radcliffe gradually gained the ascendancy after two periods and were ahead with a four goal lead. The third period was drawn, before Warrington made a spirited comeback in the final period and came to within two goals of Radcliffe. The game was settled with a goal from Radcliffe in the last minute giving them a 10-7 victory. Rafik Tahraoui was presented with a trophy for the league top scorer, before the team were presented with their runner up medals.
Last year the team came fourth in this competition, so the runner up spot shows continual improvement. Most of the team will be able to play for two more seasons in this age group, and therefore the team is already looking forward to next season.
Team

Manchester and District Under 14 Tournament Preliminary Round
The preliminary round was to determine which two teams would go through to the final. Warrington played two games against Tyldesley and Radcliffe on a league basis.
Warrington played Tyldesley in the first game and came out easy winners with a 14-3 margin, most of the goals coming from Louiza and Rabah Tahraoui.
Courtney Dean at 11years of age and by far the smallest player on the team made an excellent contribution to the game.
The second game against Radcliffe was very close with no more than a goal either way throughout. In the last minute Radcliffe scored and were winning 5-4. With a grandstand finish and cheering supporters, Warrington levelled the score at 5-5 with a long range goal from Rabah Tahraoui with only ten seconds left on the clock.
In the second game against Tyldesley again they were no match for Warrington with a comfortable 9-0 victory. Warrington had therefore qualified for the final, it was now a matter of whether they could beat Radcliffe in ythe last game.
Warrington came out strongly and went into a 4-1 lead, and looked set for victory. However a bit of tiredness and a spirited performance from Radcliffe saw them claw their way back to 4-4 to give a nail biting finish going into the last minute. Once again Radcliffe scored to make it 5-4 but this time Warrington could not save the day as they hit the post in the dying seconds. Warrington went through to the finals in second spot which will be played next weekend.

Warrington Win last game of 16& under league
On Saturday Warrington 16& under water polo team scored a convincing victory over Failsworth at Great Sankey Leisure Centre to finish the league with an impressive score line of 19-3. This puts Warrington at the top of the Manchester and District league. Only Radcliffe, with two games to play, are capable of equalling their points tally. If Radcliffe manage to win the remaining games then there will be a play off for the championship in the next few weeks.

Mark Waters, Hazel Musgrove, Heather Fox, Abbey Donnell-Jones, Andrew Byrne, Robert Dickenson, Nathan Whitney, Rafik Tahraoui, Samir Tahraoui and Rabah Tahraoui
Water Polo Seniors Win Tournament
The Warrington Senior water polo team have won their first trophy for many years in the Liverpool & District second division tournament held at the Austin Rawlinson Pool , Speke on Sunday 12th December.
Warrington played Bebington in the first game. Warrington’s early pressure came to nothing after a after a string of fine saves by Bebington keeper. After an exchange of goals Warrington went into the lead and ran out as eventual winners by 4-1.
In the second game, Warrington played Wallasey in a tough encounter. It was not until mid way through the second period that Warrington eased ahead and secured a comfortable victory by a margin of 6-2. The last game against Southport would determine the tournament winners. At the end of the first period it was 2-0 to Warrington. A steady performance in the second half saw another two goals to Warrington and an overall margin of 4-0.
Warrington were presented with tournament trophy and medals for all the players. It was particularly pleasing to note that four of the team were players who have graduated from the junior team in recent years (Ian Musgrove, Glen Musgrove, Andrew Byrne and Rafik Tahraoui).
Warrington 14&u in Northern Counties Finals
The Warrington water polo14& under team played at the aquatics centre in Manchester on Saturday 11th December. In the first game Warrington were easy winners with a score line of 8-1 against Preston. In their second game despite going 4-2 ahead after Warrington scored two penalties, Southport finished strongly and narrowly won an exciting game by a margin of 4-5. These results put Warrington in a creditable tenth place overall for the competition. Only three of the players were at the top of the age group and it was good experience for the younger team members.
Team
Rabah Tahraoui, Samir Tahraoui, Robert Dickinson, Daniel Rex, Lauren Whitney, Conor Dean, Patrick Horgan, Ian Waters, Louisa Tahraoui and Jamal Tahraoui.

Warrington Swimming and Water Polo Club have won the Cheshire ASA 16&u Water Polo Championship held at Europa Pool Birkenhead, on Sunday 9th May. The competition was run on a league basis with three other teams competing. In the first game against Halton Warrington went one goal behind in the first minute before scoring two goals to give Warrington a half time lead. Warrington piled on the pressure in the second period and went 4-1 ahead. Halton rallied in the last two minutes of the game to produce an exciting finish and in the end Warrington narrowly winning 5-4. In the second game, they beat Chester who were last years winners after producing one of their best games of the season with a final score of 12-3. Warrington Water Polo Moel Famau Challenge
Thanks for all the effort, both in meeting the challenge and having an excellent day out. The weather was fine, although it was quite cool and breezy at the top. Thanks for all those who made it to the top, and for the amazing energy of the team who then proceeded to have a game of rugby as we had obviously not tired them out enough. Meanwhile the parents took a well earned rest by their cars. Particular thanks for Dave for organising the event. Overall we have collected £260. Well done and thanks to all the sponsors for their contributions. The money will buy a new set of polo caps, additional polo balls and other items of equipment for the club Sponsors in no particular order- apologies if spelling not correct.
