Match 1 – ORCA v Warrington
A missed chance from Warrington in the first minute was quickly rectified, and a flurry of goals in the first half together with a fantastic save by Finton gave Warrington a 4-1 lead at Half Time.
The second half saw Warrington continue as they began, with more shots going in and more great defensive work with the full-time score of 7 – 3 to Warrington.
A great boost for the team as they prepared for the rest of the matches.
Match 2 – Warrington v Chester
Warrington started strongly and within the first three minutes were 2 – 0 ahead. Chester then had a few quick breaks to level the score and a good late save from Finton in the final seconds of the first half had the score at 2 – 2 with all to play for.
Chester started the second half brighter and a succession of quick breaks had the score at 4 – 2 to Chester. Warrington defended well and had a shot over the goal (!) however Chester just outplayed us with final score being 5 – 3 Chester.
An entertaining match from two evenly matched teams.
Match 3 Tyldesley v Warrington
Warrington were against a team in great form and despite an excellent save from Warrington, Tyldesley were 4-0 ahead at the end of first half.
Warrington came out fighting in the second half and despite a late goal from Warrington and some good saves, Tyldesley extended their lead with final score 10 – 1 to Tyldesley.
The score didn’t reflect the hard work and perseverance Warrington put in against formidable opposition.
Match 4 Liverpool v Warrington
Warrington came out determined and some excellent marking and attacking play was seen during the first half. Liverpool managed to convert their breaks to goals and following a penalty towards the end of the first half, the score at half time was 3 – 0 to Liverpool.
The start of the second half saw Liverpool take a quick goal, however more excellent defending, challenging and perseverance led to Warrington scoring a well-deserved goal. Warrington continued to work hard and defend well however Liverpool were able to maximise better the chances they had with the final score being 8 – 1 to Liverpool.
The 3rd & 4th place playoff saw Chester v Bridgefield with Chester winning 5-1.
The 1st & 2nd place playoff saw Radcliffe v Tyldesley with Tyldesley winning 3-0.
Final places therefore were 1st Tyldesley, 2nd Radcliffe, 3rd Chester, 4th Bridgefield, 5th Liverpool, 6th Warrington Swpc and 7th ORCA.
Warrington showed a great team spirit and played some excellent Water Polo against some formidable opposition, and should be very proud of their performance, with special mention to James Boyle who was named Warrington’s MVP!
Finally, special thanks go to Craig Stowell and Emily Ireland who once again worked hard with the team to ensure they were fully prepared, played their best and most importantly enjoyed the experience. Thanks Craig & Emily!

14&u M&D Chester 15 - 5 Warrington

Match Report: U14 Chester v Warrington 6/3/17

The first away game of the season for the U14 team was an away fixture at the City Baths Chester. We had eight players travelling: Emily Atkinson, El Brear, Louis Stowell, Annie Sholl, Sam Derbyshire, James Boyle, Leo Kilpatrick and Evie Sandell.

Q1. The first quarter opened to a packed pavilion in the Atlantic Pool Arena.  Annie won the swim off and Warrington were first to attack, but to no avail. Several battling exchanges took place before another promising attack from Warrington fizzled out. The first score came when Emily in goal was jostled by the Chester attackerand the ball ended up in the net. This was followed by a second goal from a close range shot that left Emily with no chance of a save. Then came some good defending from Louis to win a foul. The ball was put up to Annie, back to Leowho unleashed a long range shot to put Warrington on the scoreboard. The rest of the quarter saw Sam battling down the right-hand side, Evie battling down the left-hand side and some good defending from James. A clever backhand shot and a rebound from a good save from Emily that was scraped in left the score at 4-1 to Chester at the end of the quarter.

Q2. A swap came with Leo going in goal for this quarter. Warrington started well with Annie throwing the ball into the pit for El to fight off the defender and score. Emily performed a fancy move in her own half baffling the Chester player. She swam up the pool and got the ball into Louis in the pit who saw his shot met with a good save; unlucky. Another couple of goals went in for Chester when disaster struck for Warrington. Louis was wrapped up and Chester was awarded a penalty. Some justice was served when Leo saved the penalty but the true brutality of the decision left Warrington a man down for 4 minutes; at times it seemedlike Chester had all thirteen of their players in the water and the quarter ended 9-2 to Chester.

Q3. With Warrington reorganised and back up to seven a harsh ball under decision against Leo in goal gave Chester a penalty; Leo did just enough to tip the shot on to the bar. With some good defending from Evie Warrington won a foul. El put the ball up to Emily who fired a long range shot in to score. Annie won the ball in her own half raced up the pool like a torpedo and got the shot in only to see it saved. Warrington then won a penalty that El put away with nonchalant ease. Chester broke free but James did just enough tracking back to put the shooter off. Sam put in some good spoiling work. The score for the quarter was 2-2 leaving the overall score 11-2 to Chester.

Q4. Emily went back in goal for the final quarter and put in a couple of good saves early on. James did some good marking at the back to ensure a Chester shot was weak. Evie and Sam continued to battle. El put a long pass in to Leo who won a penalty. His shot hit the bar but he reacted quickly to put the rebound in the net. Inevitably Warrington tired in the last quarter with only seven players to Chester’s thirteen but it was a brilliant effort. In the end Warrington lost 15-5 but it was no disgrace.

4th Quarter - Dan and Luke swap caps.  Luke wins the swim off and Dom scores.  Luke, enjoying the freedom passes to Dom, who scores again.  What a partnership!  Alfie keeps the pressure on the Chester attack, leading to a counter-attack from which Conor scores.  Eleanor defends well, and Ben passes to Dom who scores.  Luke scores.  Warrington defend a Chester attack - the hosts set up, but no goal.  Dan throws a long pass to Ben, who goes on to score.  Chester attack, and Dan makes a save - phew!  Luke steals the ball from a Chester player and swims up, in possession.  Dom receives the ball and passes to Ben, who scores.  Chester attack and Luke reaches for the ball, passes it to Dan who sends the ball to Ben.  Ben scores from the long pass.  The game is in the last minute and the hosts haven’t given up.  Dan holds on to the ball, and throws long again.  Louis receives the ball and sends it to Luke, who scores.  Chester make the final attack of the match and Dan makes a save.  The match ends 1-35.

Majors - Ben 2, Conor 1, Dom 1, Dan 2, Alfie 1, Eleanor 1

14&u Warrington 3 - 16 Chester (M&D)

Warrington vs Chester (Under 14s) Saturday 11th February 2017

Chester visited the Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub with a team of strong players. Warrington’s under 14s side for the 2017 season played their opening game with slightly depleted numbers; perhaps due to the school half term.
1st quarter: James, Sam, Matthew, Louis, Evie and Eleanor were playing across the pool with Emily taking up position as goalkeeper. Warrington started the match defending the shallow end, with Chester making an early advance Louis managed to thwart them with a robust but fair tackle. Chester’s No 9 was showing some great talent and one of his many early attacks saw Emily get a hand to the ball but sadly it slipped into the net. Play up and down the pool became hotly contested, with both sides receiving various sharp blows of the whistle from the referee. Soon Louis managed to sneak through the Chester defence with a great shot right at the centre of the goal to bring the scores even. The match continued, end to end of the pool, frantic passing and attacking followed by coordinated defence and great saves, Chester eventually pulled a goal back but this was quickly answered by Warrington when Matthew found James inside the 5 metre line; James placed a low fast ball into the net to bring the teams even again. As the last few seconds on the clock ticked away Chester managed to change tactics and took a shot from long range, sealing a 1 goal advantage as the session came to an end.
2nd quarter: Warrington were now defending the deep end, early confusion and quick play by Chester resulted in an early goal. The Warrington side then probed the Chester defence, struggling to find a way through, a long shot by Matthew almost paid off, just wide of the post. Chester then countered, Emily put in a great performance during a period of sustained attack, saving several unpredictable and varied shots. Louis had a good opportunity, he placed a great shot into the Chester net but it was disallowed on a technicality. Warrington played several good shots over the next few minutes, mainly from Louis and Matthew but the whole team pulled together to open the chances. Chester however demonstrated superior movement, their defensive positions were good and their creative play with accurate shooting gave them an advantage where it mattered.
3rd quarter: Warrington held possession for the opening minute of the quarter, with Louis taking a long shot on goal that was stopped by the Chester keeper. Another shot followed 30 seconds later but the keeper again managed to steer it wide. The restart resulted in a sudden sprint forward with the ball from Chester’s No 2, resulting in a goal that the whole team struggled to defend against. Chester’s No 2 now had a taste for goals and his confidence seemed to disperse amongst the rest of his team, resulting in several players taking their chances at the Warrington end. It wasn’t all one sided though, Louis had a solid shot bounce high off the Chester cross bar, Eleanor had a shot just tipped safely away and Matthew had a great shot blocked. With both teams tiring from the feverish activity, the referee’s whistle drew the period to a close with Chester ahead.
4th quarter: Chester were in ebullient mood, the final quarter started with an ambitious play that resulted in the ball shooting just wide of the Warrington net; demonstrating their intent to not rest on their laurels. A flurry of shots were made over the next 3 minutes, the Warrington defence were becoming frustrated and encouraging one another to move up the pool whenever possession was regained. During a period of unrelenting attacking play by the Chester forwards, Sam and Evie managed to string together a series of great passes and Matthew was in a good position to play a lob shot - which the keeper reacted to just in time. Undeterred, the Warrington team regrouped and with 3 minutes left on the clock the whole team pulled together, allowing Matthew to find the Chester net with another goal. There then followed some real sparks of imaginative Warrington play, but Chester were always waiting and watching, a mistimed pass gave possession to Chester’s No 7 and although he was at a wide angle, the Warrington team struggled to prevent the goal. A goal from Louis in the final minute raised the spirits of the Warrington team but this was sadly disallowed again. The game finished with both teams exhausted and Chester as the overall victors, but the Warrington side played well together and it is still early in the season, Emily had a tough game but showed a great example by never giving up and always willing her team mates on.
A difficult game for Warrington against a physically larger and stronger Chester side. Valuable lessons have been identified and several factors of this game will be taken into the forthcoming training sessions to improve aspects of the under 14s play for future matches.
Coaches Comments
With the minimum number of players, most at the lower end of the age group (one well under at age 11), odds were always going to be against us. Despite a poor result there were moments of excellence displayed by Warrington - we need to build on the good stuff and work hard to improve the not so good stuff - we will make changes to our training schedule to address some of the issues we need to focus on.

12&u Warrington 4 - 6 Chester (B&D)

Warrington vs Chester (Under 12s) Saturday 11th February 2017

This first league match of the season against Chester saw a motivated and excited team of under 12s lining up for what promised to be an evenly matched game. Playing across the width of the pool, Warrington had Joe in goal with Thomas, James, Chris, Lilly and Finton in the water and Sam and Lilly in reserve.
1st quarter: On the referee’s whistle Warrington won the initial possession and went straight into an attack, losing custody of the ball just as things started looking promising – Chester launched a counter attack and Joe made a great save from their first shot of the game. Over the following couple of minutes the ball passed between each team without much threat of a goal from either side, until Chester moved into position to shoot and Joe bravely parried the ball wide. With a minute and a half remaining on the clock some superb passing and positioning play allowed a favourable shot by Sam - just tipped over the bar by the keeper. Following the restart of play Warrington swiftly regained possession and Sam almost managed to find the back of the net with 90 seconds remaining. Chester reacted quickly and their No 3 just managed to sneak the ball past Joe giving them a 1:Nil lead as the clock ticked into the final minute. A shot for Warrington by James with 20 seconds left on the clock looked almost there, but bounced off the crossbar, completing the action in an evenly matched opening period, with Chester holding a slim advantage.
2nd quarter: Winning the ball from the very start the Warrington team quickly swam into attacking positions, James received a great pass and struck successfully for goal, it’s now Warrington 1: Chester 1, with only 4 seconds elapsed on the clock. Following some splendid offensive and defensive play by Chris, Thomas and Lilly, Sam had a shot on goal that sadly met the crossbar. Chester’s No 9 and No 2 were putting in some very strong offensive moves with the whole Warrington team doing whatever they could to stifle their play. Shots were coming from all angles and Joe and the defending players were often tested. As this phase ticked by it looked like both teams were going to finish on even scores, but with 30 seconds remaining a loud bang resonated across the pool as a strong shot from James clunked off the crossbar. Following the restart, Warrington performed some amazing positional play with a good tackle from Lilly, followed by tidy passing and great communication, James played a quick pass to Thomas and right on the buzzer Thomas’s shot found the back of the net, it’s half time and Warrington are 2:1 up.
3rd quarter: Some substitutions on the Warrington side saw Tilly and Sam take some well earned rest and the fresh arms of Finton and Chris came into the pool. Following an uneventful first few passes between both sides, the Chester No 3 took an ambitious shot from the half way line that caught Joe off guard bringing the score to 2:2. The Warrington forward pairing of James and Thomas replied with 3 accurate shots, 2 stopped by the keeper and 1 that hit the post, things were looking good again! Lilly brought the ball forward from the restart and spotted James was unmarked, an accurate pass saw James take perhaps the easiest shot of the game so far to put Warrington back into the lead. Chester counter attacked straight after with some very fast swimming and took a powerful shot, with Joe skilfully positioning himself to narrow the options, what looked like a great opportunity resulted in Chester hitting the crossbar yet again. The whole Warrington team now pulled together to try and hold their advantage, some terrific defensive moves really tested the Chester forwards over several shots, but right on the buzzer again, Chester eventually found the back of the Warrington net, closing the session with 3 goals each.
4th quarter: Chester came out strong with their No 2 taking an early and potent shot on goal that was saved well by Joe. Warrington rapidly answered with their own attacking play, James shook off his marker and played a shot, beating the keeper and putting the team ahead once more, whilst sealing his first hat trick. A further set piece by Warrington almost saw Sam add to the scoresheet with the keeper just managing to keep the ball out. Soon after, the Chester team appeared to pull together a few moves of their own, with their No 4 dodging through and successfully bringing the scores level again with what was a very strong shot. With 2 minutes of the match remaining, both sides now had everything to play for, Chester looked likely to score straight away but Lilly tipped the ball from the forward’s hand just as he prepared to shoot. Shortly afterwards, another prompt breakaway by the Chester side soon resulted in Joe having to go 1 on 1 with their No 4, narrowly missing out after a strong display and wide dive. Chester were now ahead and following a few further chances broke through again in the final minute, making the score at the final whistle Warrington 4: Chester 6.
A tight game with a final score that didn’t reflect how well the boys and girls from Warrington played, a valiant effort was put in by all and some real talents are starting to break through; showing great promise for the rest of the Under 12s 2017 season.
Coaches Comment
12&u squad got off to a very promising start to the season playing a very closely fought 1st match - it was only in the last quarter the game got away from them. Had it not been for a few unlucky shots it would have been a different story. Well done team!

SNW (U14) Club Championships 2017 - Saturday 28th January

This tournament consisted of 10 teams across the North West region split into 2 groups.

Each team played one another and then progressed into playoffs to determine final positions.

Our team was young and relatively inexperienced versus the other teams who had big players and big squads.

Our first game was against Liverpool WPC where we only had 7 players which meant no substitutes versus a Liverpool team with subs.

We started off nervously as we conceded the first goal in the opening minute.

The team then suddenly found their form and scored three goals without reply (2 from Louis and one from Eleanor).

Leo then made a good save to maintain our advantage and keep the score at 3-1.

However, the extra numbers made a difference in the second half as we conceded 4 goals and consequently lost the first game 5-3.

The next game was against Bridgefield B where Emily and Leo swapped positions (Emily now in goal) and we scouted 2 extra players (Matt and Adam).

Once again a slow start meant that we were 1-0 down but soon after Louis got one back with a steal soon followed with a goal from Bridgefield to give them the advantage and make the score 2-1.

Emily made a string of good saves to keep the scores close and soon after Louis equalised with a solo goal.

Matt won the game in the final few minutes with a goal to make it 3-2. A great result !

The next game was against Tyldesely where Emily and Leo swapped positions again with Leo in goal this time.

Warrington got off to a flying start with Matt scoring the first goal with a great team move involving James, Eleanor and Matt.

Tyldesely then started to find their feet and scored soon after to make it 1-1.

Strong defending from Sam and Evie kept the scores level and then Warrington got their noses back in front with another goal from Matt.

Tyldesely kept the pressure on us and subsequently scored 4 more goals to make the score 5-2.

Warrington came back to score another goal but it was too late as the game ended 5-3. A good result against a strong and experienced Tyldesely team.

The last group game was against Manchester A.

This was a very strong and experienced Manchester team who got into stride very quickly and scored 5 goals.

However, Warrington stuck to their task and responded well with a penalty from Louis (5-1).

Manchester A then came back strongly with another 4 goals to make the score 9-1.

Warrington players never stopped trying and led to Eleanor scoring (9-2).

Further strong defending from Evie, James and Sam ensured that Manchester did not score again until the final minute to make the final score 10-2.

This meant that we had  the group stages 4th in our group and consequently had to play in a 7th/8th playoff match against Lancaster.

Unfortunately for this final match at the end of a long afternoon, we had no subs.

Lancaster started well scoring the first goal and forcing Leo to make a succession of good saves.

They then scored their second goal from a rebound to make it 2-0.

A good team move involving Emily, Louis and Eleanor pulled one back for Warrington.

Lancaster then hit back with 2 goals despite great team defence from Evie, Sam and James (4-1 to Lancaster).

Louis and Eleanor then scored for Warrington with Lancaster scoring in between to make it 5-3.

Eleanor then had a shot that hit the bar and James had a great effort which just went over the bar.

Lack of substitutes meant that Lancaster got away in the second half and eventually won the match 10-3.

Overall, we finished 8th against some very strong teams who had more experience and more players.

Well done everyone – as the team plays together more and gets stronger with age and experience, the future looks good.

Senior Men's Cheshire Tournament

Warrington men’s team came out champions of Cheshire after victories over Chester and Birkenhead at Europa Pools. Having watching Birkenhead play Chester in a very close game which Chester won 6-5 with a goal in the last 2 minutes Warrington new the cup could go to anyone.

First up was Chester and Warrington played to focus on defence and stay composed in attack. The defence was solid and Warrington were 2-0 up at half time thanks to goals from Oli Rhodes and Addison Brown who was trying to find his shooting arm. In the second half Chester pulled one back but Warrington remained resolute. David Price was wrapped up for leaving the pool when he thought we had scored. Two more goals from Dan Farini and Dom Richard sealed the 4-1 victory for Warrington.

Birkenhead were immediately next and waiting rested and ready. Warrington had to recoup their energy and prepare for another tough game. Warrington’s foundations were again focused on defence and leaving no cracks at the back. Despite this they conceded first but did not lose their composure. Addison had found his range and scored 3 goals in the first half added to be Ian Musgrove and 2 more From Oli Rhodes, Warrington lead 6-2 at half time. The second half was more of the same restricting Birkenheads chances and remaining composed in attack. In the second half David Price was again wrapped up this time for mouthing at the referee (tut tut). 2 more a piece from Addison and Oli and a goal from Dominic Richard meant Warrington won 11-3. Match 1 – Chester v Warrington: Warrington started strong and took early possession.  Following the exclusion of a Chester player for a foul, Louis immediately took advantage and scored the first goal of the match.  Chester quickly came back with three successive goals, giving a half-time score of 3-1.  Warrington started the second period well but unfortunately could not convert a penalty opportunity into a goal.  Following a further two goals by Chester, Josh pulled a goal back For Warrington.  Final Score 5 - 2 to Chester

Match 2 – Warrington v ParagonParagon took the lead in the first minute, but Warrington responded with two successive breaks which both resulted in goals by Louis.  Towards the end of the period Warrington were under a little pressure but defended well.  In the second period Warrington came out strong just missing a couple of opportunities before taking a further two goals by Sam and Louis.  Warrington’s defence and goalie prevented any further goals from Paragon.  Final Score 4 – 1 to Warrington

Match 3 – Bridgefield v Warrington: On paper this was always going to be Warrington’s toughest match yet Warrington put up a great fight despite dropping five goals in the first period.  Spurred on by the half-time team talk, Warrington came out much stronger and, after a couple of missed shots on goal, Warrington took two goals in quick succession (both by Louis), the second being a penalty. Although Bridgefield took a further three goals in the second period, Warrington kept the score to a very respectable level.  Final Score 8 – 2 to Bridgefield

Match 4 – Sheffield v Warrington:  Sheffield fielded a very strong team a got an early goal with a long-ranged shot.  Warrington responded with a similar shot on goal which just went over.  Warrington kept the pressure on but conceded three further goals in the first period.  Sheffield began the second period as they had ended the first, and despite taking a further eight goals, Warrington put up a good fight and frustrated several other shots on goal by Sheffield.  Final Score 11  0 to City of Sheffield

At the end of the group matches, the positions were as follows:

Group A

Group B

1. Lancaster
1. Bridgefield
2. Tyldesley
2. City of Sheffield
3. Rotherham
3. Chester
4. Liverpool
4. Warrington
5. Radcliffe
5. Paragon

The top two teams of each group competed for the Cup Competition, whilst the remaining six teams competed for the Plate Competition.  The remaining matches were extended to two seven-minute periods.

Match 5 – Rotherham v Warrington:  The first period started evenly balanced.  Rotherham took an early lead before Warrington equalised from a goal by Louis.  James was unlucky to have a goal disallowed.   Rotherham regained the lead but Warrington immediately equalised.  Rotherham then took a further three goals just before the end of the period.  The second half started with two alternate goals from both teams.  James got both Warrington goals; the first from a free pass and the second from a long break down the pool. Despite losing a further couple of goals to Rotherham, Warrington were unlucky not to convert a couple of chances near goal.  Final Score 9  4 to Rotherham

Match 6 – Warrington v Liverpool:  The final match saw both teams very closely matched.  Both teams had several shots on goal, but owing to good defence work on both sides, the period finished 1-1.  Liverpool were unlucky not to score just after the whistle had blown for end of time.  The second period carried on as the first had ended, with both teams scoring alternately, and it was only at the end of the second period that Liverpool managed to get an extra two goals.  Final Score 4  6 to Liverpool

The final result put Warrington fourth out of six teams in the Plate competition.  Overall, Warrington put up a great effort, bearing in mind there was just seven of them, leaving only one substitute at any one time.  Well done Louis, Sam, Chris, Lilly, James, Josh and Torin.
